Well, the log on the latest installation of my upload program ticked over 100,000 this week, almost all of which I have posted here. So I'd have to say that at least tens of millions of thumbnail links have been posted here.

Well since you dissed my work so politely, I'll explain.

First, download a decent (i.e. non-proprietary) search engine. A lot of the big educational establishments have them on their intranets and copies can occasionally be found on tech forums.

Next, you will find there are some words common to almost all posts, so pick a few and do an image search using the aforementioned search engine and restrict the site to VEF. The bigger the sample, the more refined the number of returns. I also restricted my search to .jpg although mizlaplan didn't specify. I wasn't sure whether .gif's would come out as one file or a number. About time we banned them anyway.

Last, I did some sampling to estimate the proportion of thumbs that weren't totty (reduces the total), thumbs reposted/requoted (increases the total) and thumbs masquerading as avatars (reduces the total).

I'm looking forward to seeing your own calculations with interest.

But I suspect that your search found the number of posts with images rather than the number of image links because I know there's no way I've posted 1/7th of all the images on the forum.

Assuming that there are ~670,000 posts with image links and an average of ~10 links per post (a low number IMHO) that means almost 7 million image links posted.

Now we start wondering how many of those links are dead.

You do realize that even the thumbnails are hosted by the picture host server?

I think it's a good question and an interesting way to "measure" the site.
I've come to the conclusion that no-one knows so VEF is essentially unquantifiable.
If you disagree then I'd suggest you get counting, and counting, and counting.....
