Christine Richters was standing in the lobby of the Villa Vera Hotel in Acapulco, where she had arrived moments earlier, hot, tired, five hours and a cab ride out of LAX. We managed to catch her eye with a friendly smile before she was taken to her room. Later, she told us it was her first time out of the country -- if you didn't count the ten years she spent in Dodge City, Kansas. "Yeah, the main place to be in Dodge is Wyatt Earp Boulevard. Everyone parks in the Boot Hill parking lot and then cruises up and down Wyatt Earp. It's really boring. There's nothing there. The music is, like, a month behind. In Dodge, once you've been to Boot Hill, that's it." There is no irony intended in that last remark -- nor any malice. Christine is burdened with the ennui of a generation accustomed to rapid change. When you can adjust your perspective to any of 20 channels with a click of a remote-control device, the impact of an outlaws' cemetery fades quickly. Everything's temporary, and the wispiness of the future makes a prudent girl seek stability. No fast-paced singles' life for Christine. "Those guys out there," she says, shaking her head disgustedly, "I know what all those guys are like at night clubs. I don't want to have to go to bed with all those guys, and that's what they expect. That's just the way they are. So I'm afraid to get into those situations. They make me nervous. And the younger guys -- they don't go to school, they don't learn, they just listen to MTV all the time, you know. So I don't even want to deal with it. I'd just rather get married and not have to worry about anything." It's hard to blame Christine for her outlook, especially since her experiences with men haven't been the best. "I've never really met my dad," she laments. "My parents got divorced when I was three; he lives in Fullerton somewhere. I went through the Department of Motor Vehicles to try to find him, but the address at the D.M.V. is wrong. I hope he'll see my picture and call." Boyfriends have given her trouble, too. "I had one boyfriend," she says, laughing, "who used to tell me that I'd never find another boyfriend if I left him. He was crazy. He was really mean to me, too. He would tell me he was coming home and then not come home all night. And then he went to bed with my best friend. Of course, she's not my best friend anymore." Christine is resilient, though, and she hasn't given up yet. "I'm real insecure when it comes to boyfriends, but I would like to have the security of having someone there for me all the time." Her current relationship is reportedly a big improvement. "I don't see how it could get better," says Christine happily. That and the budding of a modeling career have made her think about some minor lifestyle adjustments. "I haven't found anything to do that I really like since I was in school. At least then, I had to get up at a certain time and I had to be there. But lately, since I haven't been doing anything, I just have gotten lazy. I was eating junk food all the time, but now I take vitamins and stuff. Now that I'm working with Playboy, I'm more into keeping myself up. I have a reason to. I mean, I have to. I look at all those other Playmates and that kind of gives me a push." Although she does dream about owning a little land for a wild-animal park, that's for the future. For now, Christine is content. I was born in Fullerton, California but moved to Kansas after my parents split when I was about three years old. I lived on a farm in a small town called Bloom, Kansas. When I was seven years old I moved to Dodge City, Kansas. Although I was an only child, I grew up with one stepsister and a stepbrother. I loved the farm life then and would love to live on a farm again.





After seeing some of my stepfather's Playboys, I decided to send in some pictures of myself. I was asked to do a test shoot. When I received the call that I was going to be Miss May 1986, I felt like I had won a sweepstakes. Before I knew it, I was on my way to Acapulco to shoot my centerfold.



Before flying to Acapulco, I had to spend the night at the Mansion. I was 18 years old and had never been away from home by myself. I was so scared because I had heard how wild the Mansion was. I begged the Playmate Promotions people to let me stay at a hotel instead, but they said I couldn't.
When I got to the Mansion I went right to my room, locked the door and sat on the bed. About five minutes later another girl knocked on the door and asked if I would like to play Yahtzee with her. I agreed and we went to the movie room (or living room) and played Yahtzee for a couple of hours. The Mansion was quiet, all was well and I had cried for nothing.



I enjoyed the rest of my stay there. Everyone was very friendly, and they had the best almond cookies! The animals were my favorite part of the Mansion. While I was there I met Michael J. Fox, Tony Curtis, Rob Lowe and, of course, Hugh Hefner. Hef was very nice and polite. He was always smiling. Wouldn't you be if you were him?

Luckily, my family didn't mind my posing in Playboy. My grandmother was excited and even appeared with me in my Playmate video at the L.A. Arboretum. After Playboy I found that I was more open. I'm still shy, but I'm more comfortable with new people and myself.

Becoming a Playmate also helped me to locate my father, whom I had not seen since I was three years old. A lawyer who saw my pictorial helped me to locate him. It turned out that he had lived only 20 miles away from me the whole time. Now we visit and do things together.

I have a few Playmate friends whom I get to see at Glamourcon. Debi Johnson and Julie McCullough are good friends of mine. I also recently met Veronica Gamba at the L.A. Glamourcon, and we've been friends ever since.

Currently, I am divorced and living with my four-year-old daughter, a rottweiler named Strudel, an Australian sheepdog named Wrangler and a pet hedgehog named Sonic. Like my mother and my aunt, I work as a nurse (LVN) specializing in home health care. I hope one day to buy a house with a bit of land so that I can have some farm animals.

I guess growing up in Kansas made me a country girl, because I love country music and rodeos. My favorite rodeos are the Bull Riders Only and National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. I plan on entering my daughter in the mutton-busting competition. It's a competition for little kids in which they sit on a sheep with their arms around the sheep's neck and see how long they can hang on before falling off. My favorite country singer is George Strait. If anyone knows him, please tell him I'm looking for him!
