Another reason why genre fans love Athena:
she was in the "Remember" episode of 1996's
Star Trek: Voyager.


I have to put aside several VEF posts in the works, a couple already two weeks old, because I prepared this post on Kari Wuhrer, when I suddenly remembered how much Kari meant to me.

Kari appeared in the greatest video game ever created, Yuri's Revenge, an expansion of "Red Alert 2" (courtesy of Westwood Studios, now sadly defunct; I recently mentioned another product of this fine company, their "Blade Runner" game featuring the likeness of Sean Young, while composing a detailed post for her).



In the game's finale, the players were given a chance to imagine being with the
game's ladies. The "sexy" scene may be seen here.

Athena Massey played the Allied communications officer, and while I was mostly impressed by Kari Wuhrer, of course I was knocked out by the lady we are celebrating. Now that Athena had infiltrated my mind, how could I have avoided preparing a post on her?

Once I followed up years ago on tying to learn more about the Yuri's Revenge ladies, in Athena's case, I was delighted that (just like Kari) she was not shy about showing herself off not once, but a good number of times (nicely covered on this thread that Wendigo thoughtfully began back in 2008).

One of Athena's works that I had dug up at the time was Seinfeld. She had appeared in a season seven episode entitled "The Engagement."



Boy, I wish I knew how that Jerry Seinfeld kept landing the highest order of the loveliest ladies. Athena was not onscreen for long; she barely had any lines, and the gag focused on how she ate her peas one pea at a time.


I took these images off Athena's Facebook page, which she is charmingly
still active in. It appears she has a side business of providing autographed
photographs for all of the boys who have not forgotten her. I later noticed
the second shot displaying her magnificent form was hardly a discovery,
as Wendigo had put up the same photo in Post #1 of this thread, fourteen
whole years ago. Her line accompanying the photo in her April 25, 2022 entry
was: "What are you doing to celebrate National Lingerie Day today?"

Now that I'm looking at her IMDb filmography and getting my memory refreshed (I had gone through this page years ago, seeking where else to find her), I see she has also appeared in the superheroine series, Black Scorpion, in what seems to have been three episodes, twenty-one years ago. I never got into this Roger Corman production, although I've had an appreciation for the cleavage of Black Scorpion, whom I see was played by Michelle Lintel (no VEF thread for her, and evidently mentioned only twice in the Classic American Lesser Known Celebrities thread, here and here. The last one features one of Member and Grand Archivist Gemini37's Femme Fatales scans, for those wishing to learn more about Michelle. Sadly, her career appears to have pretty much begun and ended with the superheroine series). 2001 was also the year for Yuri's Revenge.


These are my original frame grabs from Poison Ivy: The New Seduction (1997),
and I didn't offer more because the tantalizing views have already been covered
on this thread several times. In the film, Athena plays the cheating wife of the
household soon to be in severe trouble, thanks to the arrival of the third Poison Ivy,
played by Jaime Pressly, who was the film's primary saliva producer. Athena's screen
time was, I'd say insultingly, very short. As a side note, while the first Ivy was Drew Barrymore,
the second one, Alyssa Milano, declared her "Poison Ivy days were over." That was it for her
onscreen nudity, and although she certainly has the right to make such a decision, all the
more reason why we must appreciate actresses such as Athena Massey and Kari Wuhrer,
who do not turn up their noses at the idea, as though nudity is detrimental.


So 2001 was known for two developments; 1) a Space Odyssey, and 2) the year Athena stopped. Isn't that wacky?

Athena Massey was thirty-four when she left in 2001, still not far from the top of her form, and she had built enough of a track record, increasing the odds she would be in demand. Probably this departure must have been a "life decision." and she needed to attend to other callings, such as, perhaps, raising children. (I may have been on to something; later noticed from her IMDb biography that she was married in 2001, and two daughters followed.)


Of her character, Athena stated, "I like Hurricane; she's
impassioned by marine life and she makes waves —
literally!" (As quoted in the second page of the last
post's Femme Fatales article. Interestingly, the 1999
article ends with the claim that she launched a comic book
entitled Athena, Warrior Eternal. She has used the word
"warrior" to describe herself, elsewhere.)


Marine biologist Gail Waters crusades to clean up the seas of toxic wastes, but then she and her two assistants are bitten by a
radioactive spider, or maybe something else gives them powers and makes them go cuckoo. The second photo features heroine
Black Scorpion, as well as her cleavage, in case you missed it.

Athena "sort of" returned in 2019, via a four minute short film entitled, Guinevere and the Divinity Factory, which barely counts as a return. There's no information regarding this project on its IMDb page, but some YouTube videos as this identify Guinevere and the Divinity Factory as an "indie comic." Yet this four-minute short film appears to be live-action, so my best guess is that it may be a promotional item. Conclusion: for all intents and purposes, she is out of the picture.



This is not right. Why didn't Athena Massey take the example of her grandfather, Raymond Massey, and just keep going? Raymond Massey was born in 1896, broke in to the business at the beginning of the Great Depression, 1929 (the formidable period did not stop Raymond Massey), and kept at it until 1973, or one decade before he died. Why did Athena show such disrespect for her famous relative? All right, all RIGHT, Athena is not related to Raymond Massey, but the point is still valid. You understand what I'm sayin', right?

Here is what Athena had to say, as quoted in the second-to-last post's 1997 Femme Fatales article (this page, to be exact), as presented by Grand Archivist Gemini37, which also drives home illuminating, although disturbing, truths:

For a woman as gorgeous as Massey to be rolling around in the mud (and in the buff) for psycho-melodramas and erotic thrillers is disheartening, to say the least. Of course, every actress harbors the hope that she's "working her way up," though they delude themselves into doing T&A—over and over and over again— by clinging to that contrived ethic; but Athena Massey is not cut from the same cloth. After seeing her in THE RED SHOE DIARIES, I felt as if I had just watched Princess Grace Kelly in PORKY'S.

My first question was my most pressing: Why? "I was BORN naked!" she declared. "Uh-oh," I initially thought, "—she didn't get a letter from her drama coach." The more we talked, however, the truth became increasingly apparent. She's too smart to land the leading lady roles—you know, the kind that usually go to ditsy blondes or naive, non-threatening types. Athena Massey is not blonde, she's not ditzy and she's not innocent; her drive and intelligence polarize the actress from non-threatening roles. Massey is a no-nonsense business woman who works to live and lives to work. She's got a dynamite body and has no qualms about showing it.

Fatales article, but later noticed Wendigo had put up
the same in Post #1. Egg, please begone from my face.

If you read the caption underneath the "Poison Ivy" photos above, Alyssa Milano represents the bulk of screen actresses in turning their noses up at nudity. Alyssa, who is only six years younger than Athena, has had her career flourish, while Athena's has stalled.

Of course, Alyssa Milano had the advantage of being associated with recognizable and prestigious movies and TV shows, and that has helped. We know Ms. Milano is not supremely more talented as an actress, and she certainly is not more beautiful. Did Alyssa's decision to limit herself to being taken "seriously" help? Probably. So there is a price to be paid for those such as Athena. All the more reason why the ones such as Athena, or the ones who are not "cut from the same cloth," must be greatly appreciated.

(Tellingly, at the time of this writing, Alyssa Milano's VEF thread is over twenty times longer than Athena's.)

I'm going to wind this post down now (it was meant to be a "quickie"; why does this keep happening?) by reminding those reading as to a primary reason why Athena is a captivator. (She may have appeared in 1998's Termination Man, but she was never with the Terminator. Unlike Alyssa Milano, who was rescued by him in 1985's Commando.)



As with Poison Ivy: The New Seduction, where I only presented token photos, there isn't much new that I may add for The Unspeakable, 1996. (See Member "DCV"'s Post #20 from 2019.) The reason why I picked it is because this film has a connection with the film I decided to highlight, which is coming up. Athena plays a cop who goes undercover to nab a criminal, and then becomes infatuated with the prime suspect. Luckily, the sex scenes were on the kinky side.





My big finish concerns Undercover Heat (1995), which was the main film I dug up years ago, when I wanted to watch Athena in non-video game action. (It's not as though this film has been ignored on the thread, either. See SpEffects' Post #8 from 2010, Ruffah's Post #15 from 2014, and Chromax's Post #18, 2017.)



I thought this was a pretty good film, because it worked on two levels: as an "erotic thriller," and as a regular thriller. In addition, there was a very interesting psychological factor at work. Policewoman Athena Massey goes undercover to work as a prostitute in a classy brothel, in search of the killer of the girls. The problem is, although she is supposed to be shielded from actually taking part, circumstances force her to "do her duty." Then she gets sucked in, and does an about-face from her initial tomboyish demeanor... turning into a bit of a nymphomaniac.



Can you imagine what Meg Foster, who played the madam, must have been thinking? ("Why, just a few years ago, it was I who was being cast in the 'sexy woman' parts.")





It's undeniable that wherever you look on this anatomy, you can't help but say "wow." (And perhaps another word or two.) Yet if I may draw your attention strictly to the face from the second row's first photo above.... isn't that face simply the loveliest?




To cap off, Athena even went lesbian. How can you go wrong?

"The magic happens outside your comfort zone." That's Athena's motto, as she reveals in this YouTube interview. The website address on the photograph below relates to the business she has established for herself, as Athena is a consultant for wellness and skincare. She also makes a point about how she is still in the game, as an actress.



This other and longer interview was obviously more informative. She reveals that her idea was never to distance herself from the profession, but both her daughters turned out disadvantaged (involving high medical costs and requiring constant care), and especially since she lives in a state with no nearby family, and also after her divorce, the acting needed to be put aside. She also admits that although she's now ready to get more seriously back in the game, she is a little intimidated, since the business has changed in the last twenty years. Athena additionally sheds light on her career experiences, as with what she thought of her Seinfeld stint (32:30 mark), Undercover Heat (36:00; it does not sound like she was too happy), what she thought of working with performers such as Adam West, Frank Gorshin, Soupy Sales (44:00, not that there is anything earth-shaking), and the problems she has had to deal with (49:00).

Athena sounds spirited, adventurous (she calls herself "autodidactic," a constant self-educator), and overall like a pretty wonderful lady. She also still looks great, at age fifty-five (incidentally, the same age as Kari Wuhrer). Yet since she started out looking so spectacular, this should come as no surprise.
