Is filetype a dealbreaker? Please vote.
Hello guys.
Do you download a clip even if you don't know what filetype (AVI,MP4,WMV etc) it is? Please also speak your mind about this info in this thread.

Not something I really look at
My player (GOM) plays almost anything And the download screen usually says what it is, before you start it Usually lots of info there. Can look at the file extension too (suffix on the filename) Really boils down to the girl in the video for me. And if it is an upgrade. As far as I know, the resolution usually determines quality |

for me, the most important addition to the clip is the preview image. this, with the combined info of filesize and cliplength (which is usually embedded in the previews, as is the filetype) i usually find the least quality i am pleasured with for a clip i like to have. imho the fileinfo rule is a bit too restrictive here and only pleasures the video-editing nerds.
(i don't care at all for the filetype. the clip has to work and then all is fine)

The filetype (AVI, MP4 for example) really doesn't impact my decision to download a clip, but as hoss said a preview image, file size, runtime, and file dimensions need to be present for me to make a decision. It takes time to download a file and takes up HD storage space, so knowing those specs are important. As far as the file type, there are programs where you can convert almost any file type to another format (ex: from AVI to MP4), so not much of an issue. You calling me a nerd brah? Hehe...

may this has changed over recent time or i couldn't find it anymore but wasn't there a rule at least for modern movies that forced the member to add the complete movie info specs and not just length, resolution, type & size? if that's not the case anymore or never was, forget the the part where i said it's too restrictive here...
(just an idea for people frequently running in trouble with non-working clips/movies because of "undesired" filetypes to just visit the help section and search for codec packages for their system. this usually resolves 99% of all issues)

Sometimes wmv and mpeg-1 files give me errors while playing them. I use MPC-HC + SVP 4 Pro and Splash Pro.

i'm old fashioned, still using VLC and for few exotics Windows Media Player Classic. K-Lite Codec Pack in support and i'm pretty much fine with anything i dl for watching, editing, storing for later use or immediate trashing because it sucked too much (technical quality independent ).

All good points here. A container is not a deal breaker for me, but the other technical info might be. If I don't have the file anything is better than nothing! But if I already have a copy, language, duration, encoder (xvid, x264, x265), resolution and size are important in deciding if a file is an upgrade to something I have, either for the purpose of downloading or uploading an upgrade.
PS. If the file turned out to be a .exe I probably wouldn't click on it though. |

Hit the wrong button. Consider my vote a yes.
Filetype doesn't matter to me. Some file info is nice like filesize and resolution... --

On a personal level, yes.
mp4 is always preferred over other containers as it is equal quality at a lower filesize AND it plays on the software included in the operating system. From a moderator's point of view, yes. Reduces the necessity to click on a preview or a link to determine if the file meets the forum requirements. And it helps me determine if the post is a duplicate. From a collector's point of view, yes. Helps me to compare my existing copy to the new. Helps me in searches for a particular title to compare variations already posted.
