Grace Kelly was born in a well-to-do Philadelphia family where her strict Catholic mother placed a priority on keeping up appearances. Grace was a "meek, sickly girl, uninterested in sports" but an avid reader. Her workaholic Dad was a closet homosexual who openly expected first daughter Peggy to be the family star.

Grace began to blossom in her teens, getting involved in sports and dating different men. Spada claims she lost her virginity at 18 to an unnamed husband of an older friend. Dated actor Herb ("Mark") Miller in college, who brought her along to a photoshoot. The photographer told Grace she had good bone structure and shot her for the cover of Redbook magazine. "She's the girl next door. No glamor, no ommph, no cheesecake. She has lovely shoulders but no chest." Other modeling and TV commercials followed, paying $7.50/hour.

Always attracted to older men, Grace had an affair with another married man named Don Richardson: "She used to dance naked for me to Hawaiian music. She was a very sexy girl." They discussed marriage but the Kelly family cut it off.
Richardson: "She screwed everybody who she came in contact with who was able to do anything good for her at all. She screwed agents, producers, directors ... She just had a terrible need to have someone put his arms around her. What she needed, constantly, was was reassurance that she existed... She was starved for affection because of the family." Richardson claims cartoonist Al Capp attacked and tried to rape her when she auditioned for the Lil Abner stage play [Capp was later arrested for similar charges against a college student in 1971].

Grace had various flings with Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Ray Milland, David Niven, fashion designer Oleg Cassini and French actor Jean-Pierre Aumont. Bing Crosby officially proposed to her but was turned down. She and William Holden discussed getting married. After winning an Oscar and Golden Globe for The County Girl at age 25, Grace quickly tired of the Hollywood gossip mags and embarrassing questions from reporters about her love life. She retired from acting after just eleven films at age 27.

She met Price Rainier at the Cannes Film Festival in France. By treaty, Rainier had to produce an heir or the country of Monaco would revert back to French control. This led to more embarrassing medical tests to prove Grace was fertile and could produce an heir to the throne. According to Richardson, she told the doctors she broke her hymen playing hockey at school.

Spada: "Rumors that Price Rainier was having extramarital affairs abounded in Monaco and reached print several months before Grace's death ... Grace, for her part, appears never to have had an extramarital affair." The last third of the book details her diplomatic efforts as an official head of state, the problems raising her sometimes-rebellious kids, and her increasing dependency on alcohol. The book has plenty of innuendo but usually names names, with direct quotes from first-hand sources.
