Veterans of the golden age of late-night artistic Channel 4 programming in the 1980s might remember a documentary called Brazil Cinema, Sex and the Generals (1985). It looked at how political censorship in Brazil led to some film directors using soft porn as a medium for their views. Because it contained "controverisal" extracts from these films it was apparently banned by the IBA - twice! Which makes me wonder how I got to see it, and I may be remembering a different programme entirely?!

Whatever, one clip stuck in my memory. It showed a class full of schoolgirls singing an obscene scatological chant at the top of their voices while rubbing themselves under their skirts. I didn't catch the title, and if the complete film was ever shown I never saw it. Being partial to rioting schoolgirls I've been keeping half an eye out for it ever since. And now, thanks to the internet, it looks like I've finally found it - and inside a quarter-century!

Das Tripas Coração (1982) (I'll (mis)translate it as Entrails of the Heart) is a crude and offensive satire on life at a religious girls' boarding school in Brazil, following the dysfunctional sexually obsessed exploits of teachers, girls and domestics. A good watch, but not as much nudity as I'd hoped for, and there were no subtitles so I probably missed a lot of subtle nuances.



I liked the (ahem) "realistic" looking schoolgirls. This one here reminds me of the lovely Gail Trimble from University Challenge. But the girls' behaviour often turns ugly, and here we see them attempting to rape their delicately pretty science teacher, an incident that saw the poor woman leave in an ambulance (not without vomiting on the doorstep), a sad loss to the film. And wow, look at these spooky triplets! The school doctor thinks they may all have the identical thing wrong with the base of their spines.

An extended version of the scene I remembered for so many years. It begins with one unspeakably naughty girl mistaking the chapel for the school lavatories. Then the action moves to the classroom where the girls appear to be showing off what they were taught today by the monkeys at the zoo. One girl is putting her hand under her skirt simulating (or not simulating) frenzied masturbation. You don't get to see any details (not even knickers), but as I mentioned, I'm a bit partial to this sort of schoolgirl anarchy.

After The Glittering Prizes which generated a lot of heat around the summer of 1976, the next controversial drama series to hit our screens was Another Bouquet, the follow-up to A Bouquet of Barbed Wire, with a convoluted tale of serial infidelity within an upper middle class family. Some have been disappointed by the DVD which apparently has the topless scenes excised . Here they are:

muckster is correct in identifying this film as part of the 'Visions' documentary strand, made in 1985 for Channel 4 in the UK.

For those curious to know what the girls are singing, the translation of the scatological chant is given as:

(Girl pupil is given the riband with "Miss Champion Pisser" on it)

In the programme we weren't shown why the girl was celebrated with the ribbon and chant. So, after all this time, I now finally know, thanks to this clip.

More about the film: the female director Ana Carolina explains that it takes place in an upper class college for girls from good families where behaviour is determined by hypocrisy and institution. The girls in the film all have one and the same character. There are 70 girls of about 16 or 17, but their identity is of no importance - Brazilian youth has no identity; it just doesn't count. The girls in the film have no social identity, and no sexual identity. She adds that this is how she views Brazilian youth, which has been paternalised by dictatorship and politics for much longer than the 20 years of the military regime. Central to the film is the relationship between two female teachers and a male teacher, apparently the film is the male teacher's dream.

The programme comments that Ana investigates Brazilian society, its divisions and its oppressive nature as demonstrated in other authoritarian aspects such as here between pupil and teacher.

This documentrary formed part of the 'Visions' strand, was scheduled twice for transmission but not shown. Finally transmitted as part of C4's banned season in 1991.
