Phone calls were made and the LAPD were pressured into not booking the films into evidence.

They showed this for maybe 5 seconds, at most, and it was "mosaiced" so you could not see anything. Rather disappointing.

I am not sure if it was the same exact clip but the author John Hook has a 2 or 3 second excerpt on his channel of a threesome with what looks like Bob poking the woman while she is blowing some other guy but it is all heavily pixelated as you described.

Yes. However the first bit with Bob smiling is the rehearsal he taped of the play with Vicky Wells his co-star. There is a screen capture of that in the first post in this thread. Some of the play rehearsal video has shown up in various crime doc shows over the years. The rest of it is John Carpenter dancing with an unknown woman and a very brief bit of the censored threesome.

Ahhh yes. I see that now when comparing to the photos on the first page of this thread. Something about the “look” of the YouTube footage made me think it was from the sex tapes.

Couple thoughts. I wonder if the fact that Crane was murdered and it wasn’t ever solved has something to do with why tapes aren’t available. The police could be holding some of them for evidentiary purposes. His son definitely has some material as well and could have had a change of heart about releasing it publicly, or doesn’t have the ability to, or to do so in a way that is profitable. I’m just thinking that could explain why snippets are available to legitimate news media outlets but not the public at large. It’s not like say, the Pam Anderson/Tommy Lee, Tonya Harding, Rob Lowe, or Jayne Kennedy tapes that were covered by the tabloids and also bootlegged all over the place.

Maybe someone could ask that author? Hooks? Not like “hey can you provide some tapes” but just for some insight as to why they aren’t out there.

One of the alternate theories - besides it being either Carpenter and/or his 2nd wife (Crane at that point was raking in very good money from the TV show) - was a jealous husband/boyfriend. In fact, one of the lesser theories floated about was Wells jealous husband. Wells' relationship was not entirely platonic with Crane and she was cagey about that all along. AFAIK, he and Wells never documented the deed on camera but who is to say. Part of the investigation postulated there was a missing book of photos and the killer wanted to get their hands on that but there is also an alternate opinion that the missing book was just a ruse to throw the cops off. I don't think the younger Crane son is on point about a lot of the aspects of the case but I think the majority of women - married or not - knew that they were being filmed. The equipment was too bulky and noisy to be artfully concealed. In that respect, I agree with Crane's son.

PS In the initial investigation, the police cataloged the videos in detailed fashion and made an attempt to ID everyone in each video. At least in the early days, I would suspect most women would not want their boyfriends/husbands finding out about their on screen activities.

PPS The younger Crane son did release a number of small videos on his now defunct bobcrane.com site. Not sure if those were from the confiscated group or these came from the rest of Bob's substantial collection (I am sure he had more in his home)
