Someone was asking about cucumbers... this was all I could find in my collection, a serial in Lovebirds magazine entitled 'The Vegetarians of Cucumber Manor'!

This is from part two, sadly it's censored... but does anyone have part three?

It was indeed a legal grey area and anyone who has access to a range of Sullivan's mags from the 70s (hattertim perhaps ?) should be able to confirm that the censorship varied from issue to issue with some clearly showing vibrators, vegetables etc inserted and then a couple of issues down the line a similar scene would be censored. I think Sullivan's approach was fairly cynically to maximize profits and was essentially taking a big risk with odd issues to see if they were seized from the newsagents (who had them on sale or return) and if they weren't the punters would be sure to buy the next issue expecting the same but actually get fairly mild stuff until the next time he decided to put out a stronger issue. Similarly the local porn squads were kept guessing as unless they did "test purchases" every month, they would never be certain whether a given title was likely to be obscene or not.

Lovebirds was originally going to be called Ladybirds but the Ladybird clothing company (manufacturer of childrens clothes) served an injunction after the first issue hit the streets. Lovebirds and Whitehouse were generally good value and kept testing the boundaries. Playbirds was a bit mixed and National News was often poorly printed, with smudged shots and often far too many poor black and white pics.

Apart from Mary Millington there were a good number of girls who posed with wide open legs and the mags had, for then, rare spreads of shaved pussy.

Whilst Sullivan's UK film releases always promised more than they gave, his mags were generally worth the money.
