Going back to beginning here, but wasn't Ups of Handyman then Re-cut into a calmer version and then re-titled before going on to television?
There is yet another forum going on Handyman here. Bill |

It was retitled "Confessions of an Odd-Job Man" at one point, and the late 80s/1990s Video releases were cut. The TV screenings and the current DVD release are the full uncut version.

I think its rather sad that established good comedy actors like Bob Todd, Irene Handel and many many others lowered themselves to appear in dross like that-they didn't really need to do it and it sort of tarnishes their obvious talent-plus to my mind these films weren't very funny anyway-the Confessions films are awful.

Now maybe these performers did not need to do these films but do we know why they did them ?. And it could all come down to paying the bills at that point in time. |

I think most of those older comedy players were fairly game for anything saucy, don’t forget that Irene had authored several books that had X rated dialogue and situations in them, before she made those films, and had no problem being photographed on the set of Come Play With Me taking tea with Suzy Mandel, Mary Millington and Penny Chisholm while all three were topless.
The photographs of Bob Todd and various starlets on the set of Come Play With Me and The Ups and Downs of a Handyman, don’t suggest he was having too much of a bad time of it either, LOL. |

No problem for the guys really, would you like to be in a film where you will be rolling around with topless models with the bonus of getting paid to do it.
As for the girls, Babs Windsor Liz Fraser etc etc they always played the naughty girls, but as nudity was now acceptable and remember that these make up 90% of the comedy films being made at the time so what choice did they have if they wanted to eat. |

I seem to recall that Elaine Paige was in one scene might have been that one with Barry Evans as the girlfriend and she is seen nipping into bed nude. Liz Fraser was shrewd, she never revealed that much flesh and really left it up to your imagination although many of us wouldn't have minded seeing her flash her tits. As for Barbara Windsor, well you couldn't really call Carry On films sex comedies(the one sex one they did do was based on Emmanuelle wasn't funny at all) the scene with her in the field losing her top is tame by those comparisons and the only other nude bit of her was seen in Carry On Abroad-her nice bare bottom from the side causing Sid James to wrinkle his face and utter a Corrrrrrrr!!
Come Play With Me was the most successful sex comedy but it also had musical numbers (I saw this for the first time ten years ago on BRAVO satellite channel) and I could see why even with Irene Handel mugging for all she was worth-Mary Millington was a lousy actress and only the films because of Sullivan anyway.

In response to Greenman's comment about talented actors & actresses doing "dross" I think it's fair to say that the 1970s were a different time and place: sex comedies were very much in vogue.
Also, despite what they might like to have the public believe, acting is about earning money for most actors. Anyway, moving on, has anyone got this 1977 film, directed by Derek Ford, called What's Up Nurse! ? A funny review & pics here - LINK - An excerpt of the insanity. Oh, and then a monkey shows up in the emergency room. And then a constipated gay guy shows up. The gay gets an enema and passes out, and the monkey gives the doctor the slip and ends up blowing the gay guy. At this point, I no longer have any idea what the fuck is going on. The film features Julia Bond , Angela Grant , Felicity Devonshire , Nicholas Field , and John LeMesurier . Apparently followed by What's Up Superdoc! in 1978.
