january's karen price can fly through the air with the greatest of ease, yet she's always down to earth

California health fanatics, Karen keeps in shape with a standard balanced diet (hold the bean sprouts), plus lots of athletic involvement. At the ripe old age of 12, she was introduced to the rigorous sport of gymnastics and took to it immediately. At the time, her father -- who is now a drummer for Rich Little and has played with such greats as Oscar Peterson and Stan Kenton -- wanted young Karen to be a musician, too. She diligently practiced her scales but soon found that while two hours at the piano were almost unbearable, spending four or five hours at the balance beam was a snap. After winning first prize in several local competitions, Karen became a teacher of gymnastics -- and developed an interest in acrobatics as well. (Gymnastics is an individual sport; acrobatics involves two or more people.) Karen loves children; since she was 15, she has been coaching youngsters in the sport, and recently she tutored a 14-year-old in reading and writing. She also has a definite soft spot for stray animals. When we met her, she had just adopted a baby squirrel, which she named J.R. (after her boyfriend, not Larry Hagman). Does Karen Price have any vices? "Sugar," she says. "I've got a serious sweet tooth. And I do swear sometimes. But I guess my only real vice -- if you want to call it that -- is making love." Many of Karen's CC portfolio pics from the original layout were faded. I made some color adjustments to one of my favorite pics.

Many thanks to Zorro41 for his scans of Karen’s layout from PB Mexico, January 1981. Many of the photos are familiar, but I had never seen several of the photos before, and they’re spectacular. Wish they’d empty the vault—so many more great photos of Karen must be in there! A great holiday present to Karen’s fans.







PB Mexico used the same photos that appeared in Karen’s PB US layout, except for four that had to be replaced to meet PB Mexico’s more restrictive standards. Karen’s CFD is the same as the one that appeared in PB Japan, but the black and white photo of Karen in the surf and two of the pictures of Karen by the brass bed seem to have appeared only in PB Mexico.

Thanks to Masque, Zorro41, and others who have put up wonderful posts of foreign issues of PB, a couple of new versions of small photos of Karen have turned up. I was surprised to learn that the editors of foreign issues sometimes cropped pictures less drastically in their Dear PM columns than the US editors did, so we get to see more of the original photos. I suspect that more “less cropped” pictures of Karen are out there in Dear PM columns from Italy, France, Spain, Mexico, etc. If anyone has a complete run of any of those issues from 1981 through 1983, it would be great if you could take a look and see if we could find more complete photos of Karen. I don’t know how often the Dear PM column appeared in foreign issues, but enthusiasts don’t always take the time to scan the Dear PM or World of PB columns, so there’s hope.

The photos that appeared in PB Italy 1983-2 and in PB Mexico 1983-11 are great, if alas small. As Topboy said on one of his posts on our thread, “It's not much, but hey it's still Karen!” I do hope there are more like these. There is also a photo in PB 1983-6 Italy that is a nice copy of a photo that appeared in US PB.

You can see that the foreign versions are less severely cropped.


I fixed the broken links on my earlier posts of scans of Karen’s 17 Dear PM appearances in US PB, so fans can have a complete run.
