Default Actress: Fay Templeton

Fay Templeton was an American stage actress. She was born into a theatrical family, with both her parents were actors/vaudevillians (John Templeton and Alice Vane), so it was no surprise that she made her stage debut aged 3 and eventually her Broadway debut in 1900 (aged 25). Needless to say she grew up rather precocious, and with an early interest in men ..... but more of that later.

Her stage career was getting gradually more successful and in 1885, she made her formal debut in a revival of 'Evangeline' which ran for 201 performances. In this show, she displayed talent as both a comedian and mimic. This led to her taking on a “trouser role,” (cross dressing as a man) ...she was a success but the play folded. She formed her own opera company and starred in various operettas, none of which fared well financially. In 1895, she starred in another 'trouser role' in 'Excelsior, Jr'. at the Olympic Theater. Unfortunately she was becoming somewhat portly by now, and joined the stock company of comedy duo Joe Weber and Lew Fields in 1896 ...she stayed with them and then in 1906 moved to the George M. Cohan show 'Forty-Five Minutes from Broadway' playing the lead. A Few months later she married and announced her retirement from the stage.

In 1911, Weber and Fields invited her to their reunion with a Jubilee touring company tour, which lasted five months and broke all records for touring companies. In 1913, Templeton again announced her retirement but in 1925, she appeared in an old-timer’s show at the Palace Theater, working with Weber and Fields. Asked if she would continue to perform, she replied, “It’s been great fun, but it’s a new Broadway and a new theater, and hereafter I’ll be content to look on from out front.”

Guess what, she returned to the stage again in 1926 to play Buttercup in a revival of Pinafore. Again, she claimed it was her last appearance on stage. But, well you know whats coming .... in 1932 lack of finances forced her to return to the stage to earn a living, appearing in Jerome Kern’s Roberta as Aunt Minnie, a dress shop owner in Paris. Bob Hope, in his stage debut, handled the comedy. She had only one song, “Yesterday.” The show ran for nine months.

She finally retired for good in 1936 (more retirements than Frank Sinatra), when she entered the Actors’ Fund Home in New Jersey. On October 3, 1939, she died in San Francisco, California, where she had moved to live with a cousin. She is buried in Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York; few attended her funeral.

As you might expect with her having a post here, her private life was 'interesting' ... as mentioned earlier, she grew up around young men (more than was normal for a Victorian girl .... so 'Quelle surprise!' aged just 15 she was off and running on the men stakes, when she eloped with one Billy West, a blackface minstrel performer, but they separated after a honeymoon of just six weeks (and were divorced 3 years later) .... well, at least she was 'a woman' now

Now that she was broken in so so speak, she was able to form male relationships, and between shows, in 1887, she began living with a Mr Howell Osborne, a wealthy broker; there is no record that they ever married, and the two had no children. The two lived in England and toured the continent for several years. Some sources claim that they had kept their marriage 'a secret' because his family threatened to disinherit him if he ever married an actress .... he died in 1895 and she was left no money.

Finally she married a Pittsburgh industrialist William Patterson, co-founder of Heyl & Patterson Inc, and she and Patterson also had no children. His death in 1931 left her broke, he apparently had left her no funds, or he had lost them.

Trivia:
  • In the 1942 musical, 'Yankee Doodle Dandy', Templeton was portrayed by actress Irene Manning.
  • She refused most film work when she had the chance, this accelerated her loss of fame but she has some film credits.
  • She was described as "The Toast of the Gay 90's".
  • One of her co-stars in the original Broadway production of "Roberta" was Bob Hope.

Default Novelist and Playwright: Natalie Clifford Barney

Natalie Clifford Barney was an American playwright, poet and novelist who lived as an expatriate in 'Gay Paree' ..... literally .... she couldn't have started further away, being born in 1876 in Dayton, Ohio, USA. She was tutored in French, which gave her a lifelong interest in all things French, and when her family moved to Washington, she was soon making headlines. As the rebellious and unconventional daughter of one of the wealthiest families in town, she was often mentioned in Washington newspapers. In her early twenties she made headlines by galloping through Bar Harbor while driving a second horse on a lead ahead of her, and by riding astride instead of sidesaddle Ooh la Laa

As an adult she spoke French fluently without an accent and made her home in Paris. In 1899, aged 23 she saw the courtesan Liane de Pougy (who has a post here), at a dance hall in Paris, Barney presented herself at de Pougy's residence in a page costume and announced she was a "page of love" sent by Sappho..... Barney later said she knew by age 12 she was lesbian and was determined to "live openly, without hiding anything". So they went at it like knives, and their brief affair became the subject of de Pougy's tell-all roman à clef, 'Idylle Saphique' (Sapphic Idyll), which was published in 1901. The thinly disguised kiss'n'tell tale of her love affair with Barney was soon became the talk of Paris (being reprinted at least 69 times in its first year ... I wonder why ) ... everyone soon worked out who the sapphic couple were in the book.

The lesbian affair was a brief one, principally because Barney was a closet reformer, who repeatedly rowed with de Pougy over Barney's desire to "rescue" de Pougy from her life as a courtesan, and de Pougy had cast her aside. However, the grass hadn't grown much, before she had her fancy tickled by the poetess Pauline Tarn (aka by her pen name 'Renée Vivien') in 1899, and before long they were also at it like a couple of stoats in a bag. They studied Greek so that they could read read the works of Sappho to each other ... but a lovers tiff ended with Vivien refusing to see Barney for a long while. She tried everything, including persuading a friend, operatic mezzo-soprano Emma Calvé, to sing under Vivien's window .... this kinda worked becasue they reconciled and travelled together to Lesbos. but Vivien was a two timing little minx, who had another lover, the Baroness de Zuylen de Nyevelt and left Barney for good, but died in 1909 (after a suicide attempt in 1908). Years later Barney said "She could not be saved. Her life was a long suicide. Everything turned to dust and ashes in her hands".

In 1900 Barney had published the first of many books, a collection of poems called Quelques Portraits-Sonnets de Femmes (Some Portrait-Sonnets of Women), which many reviewers glossed over the openly lesbian odes, but one society gossip paper cried out "Sappho Sings in Washington" and this alerted her father, who bought and destroyed all the publisher's remaining stock and printing plates His death in 1902 left her with a substantial fortune, and she never used a pseudonym again. The money allowed her to write what she wanted and not rely on sales, which was lucky or she would have starved to death .... that's not quite fair, she wrote a lot over the next six decades.

For over 60 years, Barney hosted a literary salon (attended by another of our gals, Eva Le Gallienne), discussing literature, art, music and any other topic of interest. Joan Schenkar described Barney's salons as "a place where lesbian assignations and appointments with academics could coexist in a kind of cheerful, cross-pollinating, cognitive dissonance" .... so there you are then. These gatherings attracted much gossip, when for example, Mata Hari performed a dance once, after riding into the garden as Lady Godiva on a white horse....

Throughout her life she indulged openly in lesbian liaisons, and despite the gossip and scandal this attracted, she was not put off living her own lifestyle.

Quotes:

"My queerness is not a vice, is not deliberate, and harms no one".

Trivia:
  • A chance meeting as a six years old child with Oscar Wilde, who befriended her and her mother, changed the course of her mother Alice's life, inspiring her to pursue a career as an artist seriously.
  • Both Natalie and her sister, the writer Laura Clifford Barney were inspired by their mother, to have literary careers.
  • Nearly all her published works were written in French.

Default Model: Jennifer Rovero

Jennifer Rovero is a 'model', for swimwear and less bulky clothing .... She spent her teens in Jacksonville, Florida, where she graduated from school. She started on her way to this thread via the traditional method, when she entered and won the 1998 Miss Fiesta Playera pageant in Jacksonville Beach.

Buoyed by this success, she started competing in Hawaiian Tropic swimsuit contests around the country, and it was at one of these events in Las Vegas, she was talking to a photographer and suggested that the beautiful countryside in Venezuela would be a nice place for a Hawaiian Tropic shoot. He suggested that he take pictures of her in Venezuela (isn't that what she wanted?) .... the fact that he was a well known Pl*yboy photographer was purely coincidental. Needless to say, one thing led to another and on 'Independence Day' in 1998, Rovero met publisher Hugh Hefner at The Playboy Mansion. Her centerfold spread was shot in October 1998, and luckily her mother has been quoted as saying that she 'raised both her daughters to be open minded about such things' , because, 'Quelle surprise!' this Pl*yboy shoot featured nudity .... She became an agent for models in 1999.

In June 2010 had become a 'photographer' working for Paris Hilton (and a 'best friend') and they were at the Football world Cup in South Africa, when they were both arrested for using marijuana on their luxery coach, after watching the match between Brazil and Netherlands, which they attended with Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio. However the difference between current 'world celebrity', and the girls on this thread, was cruelly exposed when after fingerprints were taken of both suspects, Paris Hilton got released and the police issued an apology for accusing her of any crime. Whereas Rovero had to 'confess' that the ‘marijuana was hers’.

This 'confession' took place when they both appeared in one of the special courts set up to deal with crimes committed during the World Cup, and after they spent four hours in a ‘filthy’ cell after they were arrested .... Rovero was fined $152 (or could spend 30 days in the jail). But, as you might have guessed, Rovero paid the fine and thus escaped from the jail time.

The case was considered in court and the charges against Ms Hilton were dropped. Her friend Jennifer Rovero pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis and was sentenced.” said Brigadier Miranda Mills a spokeswoman for the South African police. Hilton’s representative also told the press that the whole event was just a huge misunderstanding and that the person who was spotted smoking was somebody else from their group .... so that's alright then, just a criminal drug record for a member of staff (and best friend)

Trivia:
  • According to a wiki page, skimpier in meaningful content than her underwear, when the photographers asked her to pose with a cat, her face became red and puffy as she has a feline allergy. The photo session had to be canceled.
  • Rovero calls herself 'Forrest Gump' because she kept finding herself in interesting situations.
  • Rovero was a single mother who resides with her two children in New York City.
Pictures:

She has a very extensive thread here already, plus many mentions in dispatches on other threads, and featuring much 'open mindedness' so any follow ups to her thread please. Apologies for 'dupes' but I can't avoid it in her case ....

Default Politician and Socialite: Pamela Harriman

Pamela Harriman (Born: Pamela Beryl Digby) was an English born socialite, who is best known for her marriages and liaisons with important and powerful men .... a sort of mover and booty shaker in the world of the elites! She is following in a long line of ladies in this thread who have become mistresses to the rich and powerful men they met, actresses such as Katharina Schratt and singer Frances Day .... sometimes for monetary gain, or career, or other times to be at the centre of events. She was born in to privilege and influence, with her father the 11th Baron Digby and at the age of seventeen, she was sent to a Munich boarding school for six months. She subsequently went to Paris, where she took some classes at the Sorbonne but she never completed a college degree.

By 1937, she had returned to England. In 1939, while 'working' at the Foreign Office as a French-to-English translator, she met Randolph Churchill, the son of soon to be Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Randolph proposed to her the same evening that they met, and they were married on October 4, 1939. Their son 'Winston' was born in 1940. It wasn't long before the strains of a marriage taken in haste, and repented in leisure were being felt ... Randolph was posted on active duty to Cairo in the Middle East. Pamela entered into her first serious affair with President Franklin D. Roosevelt's special envoy to Europe and multi millionaire, Averell Harriman. So when Randolph Churchill accrued large gambling debts and wrote asking for Pamela to send him money to meet these debts, the marriage went in to terminal decline. During the marriage to Randolph Churchill, she is said to have had romantic affairs with journalist Edward R. Murrow; and John Hay "Jock" Whitney (US Ambassador) ..... Harriman himself would much later become her third husband.

Eventually, she filed for divorce from Churchill in December 1945 on the grounds that he had 'deserted her for three years' ... which is a bit harsh as he was fighting in the war, and many other soldiers hadn't been home for even longer. Just to be sure she had seen the last of him, when she later converted to Catholicism, she made a point of obtaining an annulment dispensation from the Catholic Church as well.

After her divorce, her lovers included the Prince Aly Khan (Muslim Prince), Alfonso de Portago (Millionaire, Marquis and Racing Driver), Gianni Agnelli (Fiat), and Baron Elie de Rothschild (Banking). She became known for her attention to the men she was romantically involved with, paying close attention to his desires, his preferences, and going to any lengths necessary to satisfy his needs during the affair. William S. Paley (CBS chief), and briefly a consort during the war, said: "She is the greatest courtesan of the century", and according to historian Max Hastings, "She was unkindly described as having become 'a world expert on rich men's bedroom ceilings'."

During her long affair with Agnelli, she nursed him through a serious injury (sustained while driving another girlfriend home), and later she became pregnant (although it was never acknowledged that this was by Agnelli), but she had an abortion in Switzerland. Agnelli later had an 'affair' within their affair, with a Princess Marella Caracciolo di Castagneto, who also became pregnant by Agnelli, and Pamela Churchill ended the affair.

Then she had a clandestine and short relationship with the already married Baron Elie de Rothschild. He supported her financially while she was schooled in art history and wine-making during this fling .... Next! There must have been times when they were virtually queueing outside the bedroom door, because about this time, she also had affairs with the writer Maurice Druon, and with the shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos

In 1959, she met Broadway producer Leland Hayward who was still married to Nancy "Slim" Gross Hawks Hayward Keith ... a girl with a posting here already (my how the little fishes swim around in these ponds!) .... he proposed to her, but first she asked Rothschild to leave his wife and was rejected, so she accepted Hayward's offer and moved to New York .... that's the spirit! So this time she decided to settle down, helped by Hayward's riches (the 'sound of music' for example), so on the day his divorce was made final, she became the fifth Mrs. Hayward in 1960. They lived a lavish and luxurious life style, mostly between their residence in New York City and the Westchester County estate "Haywire". Pamela Hayward stayed with her husband until his death on 18 March 1971.

Not one to be on her own for long .... the day after Hayward's funeral, Pamela arranged to resume her acquaintance with her former lover Averell Harriman, then 79 years old (and thankfully recently widowed ). They married in September 1971. She moved to Washington, DC, where they entertained many notable persons. With Harriman's involvement and links in the Democratic Party, her political career got started. Her last marriage lasted until his death in 1986 .... she was just running in to her second wind!!

With her boyfriend stage finally running out of steam .... she turned her hand to US politics, having been made a US citizen in 1971. She had first dipped her political toes by setting up "Democrats for the 80s", later "Democrats for the 90s", and nicknamed "PamPAC" ... finally U.S. President Bill Clinton appointed her United States Ambassador to France in 1993 (she could still turn a young(er) mans head!). She died on 5 February 1997 at the American Hospital, Neuilly-sur-Seine, in Paris after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage while swimming at the Paris Ritz the day before. ... Phew!

Trivia:
  • Her great-great aunt was the nineteenth-century adventurer and courtesan Jane Digby, notorious for her exotic travels and scandalous personal life.
  • While in Munich she was introduced to Adolf Hitler by Unity Mitford.
  • Pamela was to follow in her ancestor's footsteps, being frequently cited as "the 20th-century's greatest courtesan."
  • 'Haywire' also became the name of the bitter memoirs of her stepdaughter Brooke Hayward.
  • In her later years, she had significant legal problems with Harriman's children concerning the inheritance that he had left her.
  • In 1980, the National Women's Democratic Club named her "Woman of the Year".
  • The Dayton Agreement was signed in Paris in 1995 while she served as ambassador.
  • The morning after her death, President Jacques Chirac of France placed the Grand Cross of the Légion d'honneur on her flag-draped coffin.
  • President Clinton, dispatched 'Air Force One' to return her body to the United States.
  • In the biography of 'Madeleine Albright', Pamela Harriman is cited in contrast to Albright, as a socialite who slept her way to the top.

Default Model and Wrestler: Reby Sky

Just a quick one as off to the pub .... ..... Reby Sky (Born Rebecca Victoria Reyes) is an American glamour model, radio & television personality, dancer and professional wrestler (which is a new one for this thread!). Of Puerto Rican heritage, she was born in Flushing, a neighborhood in the north central part of Queens. Not one to waste time on non lucrative pastimes, she started her career in a belly dance troupe. In 2005, she featured in a supporting role in the off-Broadway musical, 'Secrets of the Desert' ... presumably the belly dancing had helped!

She's done the usual low brow TV and Music videos, including 'Midnight Spike' (Spike TV), 'Date Patrol' (TLC-TV), 'Faking It' (TLC-TV) and 'Más Maíz', a music video, as well as being named 'Miss Howard Stern TV' for the month of December 2009 ... anyone any wiser ... the list just goes on and on e.g. commentary for the MTV2 program, 'Lucha Libre USA: Masked Warriors' .... and is also currently working as on-air talent for Sirius Satellite Radio on the pro-wrestling show,' Busted Open'. Somewhere or other I assume that she has also performed as a wrestler .... Enough!, you get the idea.

She ain't shy, and has done a Pl*yboy spread in 2007, 'The Girls of Montauk'. She was also featured in the July 2010 edition of the Pl*yboy Cyber Club as "Cyber Girl of the Week" for the week beginning July 19, 2010 and was later named "Cyber Girl of the Month" for November 2010 ..... she has also done other shoots in and out of her skimpies for GQ, Esquire Magazine, Supermodels Unlimited, and STUFF.

She had a legal dispute with the NFL over her selling a line of football fashion handbags via one of her websites, which also promotes her self-proclaimed 'NY Giants fanatic status' as the 'NY Giants Girl' which was eventually settled out of court.

Finally, she crossed the strong arm of the law, when a routine traffic stop went pear shaped. She was pulled over in Tampa, Florida for a broken tail light in December 2007. While the police officer was writing her a ticket, Reyes got out of her truck, and refused to get back in when asked, instead she allegedly accosted the police officer who had pulled her over, and then started verbally abusing another officer who had arrived on the scene.

Reyes then got physically belligerent and attempted to turn the confrontation in to a trial of wrestling moves, physical on top of the verbal, but discovered that the 'faked' stuff on TV ain't worth crap in real life, and she was very quickly thrown on the ground and cuffed .... good! This little confrontation resulted in her appearing in court and led led to a conviction for resisting arrest. She was was sentenced to 12 months' probation, a $500 fine and 48 hours of community service (picking up trash, which is kinda ironic when you think about it).

Trivia:
  • She made several belly dance instructional DVD's
  • She has identified as being bisexual.
  • Sky was named the Quarterback of the 'Lingerie Football League's Tampa Breeze' football team for the 2008-09 season ... you don't get much more trivial than that!
Pictures:

She doesn't have a thread or very much else i.e. no major post, so no dupes search for me. Enjoy! ... if more pics then you could start a thread for her, she certainly has enough pictures out there

Default Actress: Ethel Clayton

Ethel Clayton was an actress of the silent film era .... a convent-educated girl from Champaign, IL, who sought work as a stage actress after finishing her education. she started her career on the stage and for a while she balanced her career between that and occasional film appearances .... On the stage she appeared mainly in musicals or musical reviews such as 'The Ziegfeld Follies of 1911', but rather obviously these singing skills were of not much use in silent movies (Doh), so she had to hone her acting skills in order to succeed in the movies. 1912 was something of a watershed year, she appeared in 'The Country Boy' on stage and had her short film debut in 'For the Love of a Girl'. She worked pretty much all the way through the silent era and made the transition to talkies but her parts were smaller support roles after the change until she retired in 1948. Her screen credits number more than 180 but none were notable. She died on June 6, 1966 at St. John's Hospital in Oxnard, California, aged 83.

As was often the case with the girls featured here, her private life was the most interesting part of her life ..... First there was the dodgy business partner .... In 1931, she had to obtain a Court Order preventing her former business partner, W.L. Rucker, from disposing of 316 pearls worth $20,000. Clayton and Rucker had agreed to purchase a cosmetics business, and she had provided the pearls to allow Rucker to raise money using them as surety. The deal had fallen through and he had refused to return the jewels. Rucker admitted in court to possessing the pearls but tried to claim that they had been pledged as security for a $125 loan The pearls were returned.

Then there was the marriages .... she was unlucky in love. She first married actor-director Joseph Kaufman but he died in 1918 in the Spanish Influenza epidemic. She then married former star silent film actor Ian Keith ...... Twice!! They married first in Minneapolis in 1928 and divorced in January, 1931 when she cited cruelty and excessive drinking. Apparently undaunted by this experience, he sweet talked her with the old 'I've changed' routine, and according to the New York times headlines "Film Couple Re-Divorced" (July 20, 1932, Page 20), they later remarried only to divorce again, with her once more citing 'cruelty and excessive drinking' ... guess he lied, the cad (he looks like a cad .)

Default Reality TV 'Personality': Catya “Ms Cat” Washington

Catya “Ms Cat” Washington is or was a former member of 'Bad Girl’s Club Miami' .... a 'reality' TV show in which seven women with a number of personal, behavioral, and psychological problems, and therefore deemed "bad girls" live together for three months .... really, who thinks this crappola up ... and worst who watches it? She used this as a platform to appear in 'Straight Stuntin Magazine' as 'Cover Model', 'XXL Magazine Eye Candy' and on pop video's such as the 'Video Vixen' for Drake video “Best I Ever Had,” Pleasure P video “Under,” and for the hit single “Throw It In The Bag” by Fabolous ... yawn, you get the idea.

But just when it was going so swimmingly, she has got herself in serious problems with the law. She was arrested at the Park Towne Place Apartments, at 22nd Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway by Pennsylvania State Police on 2nd November 2010 on some charges that could eventually land her major time in prison ....

The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office confirmed Catya Washington’s arrest when they booked her for multiple felony charges such as: 'possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, possession of cocaine, possession of mushrooms, possession of ecstasy, possession of one firearm, possession of drug paraphernalia, etc'. Catya’s bail was set at $500,000, and she wasn't able to meet it so she waived her right to a preliminary hearing in Municipal Court and after 3 wks 'in da slamma' she was released and given a court date of Dec. 13 for her formal arraignment .... she met the bail demand after an online fan campaign to raise the bail money. “She is maintaining her innocence,” her legal weasel reported to the Daily News during a brief phone interview.

Besides the gun and drug charges she’s facing, she also had a preliminary hearing scheduled for December the 14th, on charges of 'aggravated assault, robbery, conspiracy, theft and related other counts' all stemming from another arrest last month, according to Philadelphia court records. And finally, in April 2011 she went a summary trial in a community court related to a charge for 'fighting' (After rear-ending the wife of a man she was seeing, Cat emerged, started shouting, and then used both a chain and mace on the woman), for which she was arrested in July 2010. If any of the more serious charges stick, “Ms Cat” could face up to 15+ years in prison.... as usual with these nobodies, the celeb web sites lose interest and fail to report on the outcome .... I am assuming that she will cop for at least some prison time with this string of offences.

Trivia:
  • This little girl boasts an all natural measurements of 32DD-25-41.

Default Mentioned In Dispatches: "Bunga Bunga" Part 4

I have been bogged down 'repairing' a friends PC recently .... So my postings fell away. Oops! So to make up for it, and clear something of a backlog, I give you .."The Girls of 'Bunga Bunga' Part 4" .... well, those ladies who the Italian Bloggers, Press and Commentators have mentioned as having some connection to the scandal, but for whom the evidence I couldn't work out, or is casual at best, and possibly less than that

Elena Morales:

Reality TV show contestant in "Beauty and The Geek" .... famous for being Italy's Miss Cycling Rex .... the phone taps indicated she received 2 thousand euros from Berlusconi

Giovanna Rigato:

A TV girl, in an intercept of texts to and from Mr B, that said: "Everything okay, beautiful? You received the gift?" ....

Imane Fadil:

Moroccan model.

Manuela and Marianna Ferrera:

Brunette twins who present the weather on Italian TV in skimpy clothing.

Cinzia Molena:

A former Big Brother 5 contestant

Part 5 to follow ....... Fabrizio will no doubt let me know if any of these are female impersonators

I give you the final tranche of "The Girls of 'Bunga Bunga'" .... well, the final list of those ladies who the Italian Bloggers, Press and Commentators have mentioned as having some connection to the scandal, but for whom the evidence I couldn't work out, or is casual at best, and possibly even less than that

Ronzulli Lycia:

MEP, a friend of Nicole Minetti. Phone tapping shows that she was one of the regular attenders of the festivities at Arcore. (Lapresse).

Raissa Skorkina:

A Russian 'model' and 'PR' girl.

Ambra Battilana:

18-year-old beauty queen.

Imma and Eleanor De Vivo:

Another set of TV twins, of the game show and reality TV type ...

There are probably more girls but, frankly enough is enough, I for one am 'Bungad' up with these girls, so these are the last ones .... and

.... enough 'Bunga Bunga' to keep even an Italian Prime Minister happy!
