No playmate has ever been paid $65,000 just for posing for the month's centerfold. There have been playmates make more than 65K in the year they became a playmate but that includes appearances and other work for Playboy. The last reliable modeling fee figure I have was $20,000 in 2003.

Incidentally, that quote was originally from Wikipedia and was deleted from the Janet Pilgrim page some time ago for being unreliable.

Whatever the truth of her monetary compensation, I do know that in the 70s she appeared on a show (I believe it was Real People) and said that in addition to the cash, she did it because Hefner offered her some desperately-needed office equipment.

Imagine trying that today: "I don't have a lot of money, but I can get you a really nice stapler and a hole punch."

Well, if you want to be accurate about it: the standing fee paid to PB models in the early 50s (rather than the much smaller fee that PB paid to photographers to use exisiting studio modelling sets, as happened a few times in the first 2 years of publication) was a little over $1,000, which (in 2011 dollars) is more than $9,000. In other words, her "fee" for the poses would have been about a third of her yearly salary, today's dollars. And, she appeared three times.
Second, as she said in an interview, the "office equipment" she lobbied for was a very large, very expensive automatic envelope printing-and-stuffing machine (she was the manager of the circulation department at PB, with a staff of 4 other women) and they were getting overwhelmed as subscriptions grew in 1955 and 1956.
Finally, as she said in the "Playboy Book", she and Hef had, for some time, "been intimate". That's 1950's parlance for "The boss had been shagging her." So he was just asking his girlfriend (of the moment) to pose nude in the mag.
