According to the book "Playboy and the Making of the Good Life in America", the lovely Ms. Tomerlin was a receptionist in the Playboy offices. So I guess if nothing else she was available when they needed a model for a pictorial!

PB had finally latched onto the concept of the Playmate as the ordinary girl you could find anywhere, not just a model in a modeling agency. This was the second article PB published on photographing your own PM; the first had been in December, 1954 with Terry Ryan.

As masque51 points out, it's a shame that instead of "the girl next door" type they used to have, they now have heavily made up cookie cutter models.
