Default Singer: Taylor Dayne

Taylor Dayne (b. Leslie Wunderman) is an American pop vocalist, songwriter, and dance artist. She seemingly began singing professionally after high school in little-known rock bands and then began singing solo after finishing college ... her breakthrough record was the single "Tell It to My Heart" in 1987. The song was a hit around many countries worldwide. In the US this song was the first of her three gold singles, (the others were "I'll Always Love You", and "Love Will Lead You Back") .... She has has released a number of albums and singles to varying degrees of success, but her first hit is what she apparently is best remembered for.

She's also enjoyed some success as an actress .... she appeared in the 1997 Sci-fi television series 'Nightman' as Carla Day and she performed on Broadway in Elton John's 'Aida' in 2001. Throw in some 'independent' movies plus the TV series Rude Awakening, and Gone Country season 3 for example and she's been a busy if anonymous girl. I can happily report my complete and blissful ignorance of all of this

DUI:

Police records show that Dayne was arrested on March 6 2008 for driving erratically, and was taken into custody at 1 a.m. after failing field sobriety tests. Seven hours later, she was released after posting $5,000 bail. Initially it was all defiance .... "We intend to vigorously defend this case," said Dayne's attorney, "Her blood alcohol was below the legal limit." And when she was formally charged on April 16, she pleaded not guilty.

When it came to court she pleaded no contest to to reckless driving but got the DUI charges dropped in a Los Angeles Superior Court ... "We proved to prosecutors that Taylor wasn't driving under the influence, and that alcohol wasn't a factor in this case," said her legal eagle ... even so she was fined, sentenced to two years of probation and sent on a Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) program.

Trivia:
  • She released two dance singles under the name Les Lee called "I'm The One You Want" (1985) and "Tell Me Can You Love Me" (1986).
  • She was a Top selling pop artist of the late 1980's and early 1990's
  • In May 2002 she performed at the 19th Annual Long Beach Gay Pride Festival

She has a small thread here already, so just a few illustrative pics and any follow ups to her thread please

N.Y.P.D. Blue" and "Army Wives" star Kim Delaney shocked the audience Thursday night (9/22/11) at the Liberty Medal Awards in Philadelphia with a mangled, slurred speech that ended with her being escorted offstage.

The 49-year-old actress, described as looking "disheveled" when she took the stage, slurred her words, made strange gestures and misspoke about her own experience in the armed services.

The event was honoring former Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

During her speech, reports said, Delaney rambled on the podium about "having served in active military duty family for five years."

"I've seen soldiers come home with painful life-altering injuries borne of their time and service," she added, slurring. "I've attended numerous military funerals, including that of my best friend's son." She later clarified that these events were not real but were scenes from her Lifetime series "Army Wives."

Reports said the audience grew more uncomfortable as the speech went on, and grew more disoriented, until someone interrupted the speech and led Delaney offstage.

CBS reported that Delaney was supposed to read her speech off a teleprompter, but technical difficulties forced her to wing it... FAIL

In 2002, Delaney was arrested for DUI in Malibu, and the following year sought treatment for alcohol abuse. She has not commented on the incident.

Default Actress and Singer: Leisha Hailey

Leisha Hailey is an American actress and musician most widely known for playing Alice Pieszecki in the Showtime Networks production The "L Word" (a homosexual and transgender drama). She first started as a musician in the pop duo 'The Murmurs' until she began working for The L Word in 2004 until 2009 ... this caused her first band to split up. She then formed a new band 'Uh Huh Her'. In 2008 they released their first album 'Common Reaction' .... which was largely silence.

Her first major role was in the 1997 movie 'All Over Me' and her first TV show was in episode of 'Boy Meets World'. She has since carried on acting and her award winning indie film 'La Cucina' premiered on Showtime in December 2009. She also starred in the psychological thriller 'Fertile Ground'.

She dated k.d. lang for nearly five years in a relationship that ended in 2001, and then she began dating fashion designer Nina Garduno. She is currently in a relationship with her fellow 'Uh Huh Her' band member Camila Grey. This latest relationship received some unwanted publicity, after the pair were evicted from a Southwest Airlines flight for kissing ... she then complained to the press that it was discrimination against her lesbian gender. The Airline said it was not a gender issue but a behaviour one .... Ms Hailey has been trying to organise a 'Gay Boycott' of the airline.

Apparently the airline attendant had told them that this was a family flight and to stop kissing, and when they complained they were escorted from the plane ... She and her girlfriend issue a joint statement ... “In no way were our actions on Southwest Airlines excessive, inappropriate or vulgar … it was one, modest kiss.” They added, “We are in the process of filing a formal complaint with the airline. We hope that when all is said and done a greater tolerance without prejudice will evolve”.

The airline statement said that "Initial reports indicate that we received several passenger complaints characterizing the behavior as excessive … Our crew, responsible for the comfort of all customers on board, approached the passengers based solely on behavior and not gender. The conversation escalated to a level that was better resolved on the ground, as opposed to in flight" ... as another singer sang 'times they are a changin', but not that much

Quotes:

After topping the AfterEllen Hot 100 list of sexy women .... "Wow, I don't even know what to say. I hope Angelina's not mad at me. I have to say this really makes up for the time I was on the Homecoming Court in high school with my boyfriend (yes I had one) and he won and I didn't. So thanks to everyone. I'll try and keep up my hotness."

Since when is showing affection towards someone you love illegal? I want to know what Southwest Airlines considers as ‘family.’

Trivia:
  • At 17, she came out as a lesbian before moving to New York City to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
  • Hailey also co-wrote the Shakira hit song "Don't Bother" for her 2007 hit album Oral Fixation Vol. 2.
  • In April 2008, Hailey was named spokesperson for Olivia Cruises, a travel company which sells cruises and resort vacations marketed towards lesbian customers
  • Hailey has appeared in several Yoplait yogurt commercials as well as a BMW commercial.
  • In April 2008, Hailey was named spokesperson for Olivia Cruises, a travel company which sells cruises and resort vacations marketed towards lesbian customers

Default Singer: Amanda Overmyer

Amanda Overmyer is an American rock singer-songwriter from Indiana. She received a nursing degree from Ivy Tech Community College, and is a health-care specialist dealing predominantly in respiratory issues .... may come in handy

In her late teens, she joined a local band. Since then she has been the lead singer of several bands ... she entered American Idol whilst working as a nurse ... she was the eleventh place finalist on the seventh season and following her run on Idol, she released her debut album 'Solidify' in December 2008 and is currently working on her second album with her band ... can't wait!

She has made appearances on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show', 'Live', and 'The Morning Show', and she remains a full time professional musician since American Idol.

DUI:

So whats the beef? She reportedly has a string of other motoring offenses on her record, these include driving a car at 100mph in a 45mph zone. and for running a red light. She finally got the big one when she was arrested for DUI in 2006, when the police officer noted that her eyes were bloodshot and her balance was poor. She was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.108 and was kept in the jail for over six hours until her then fiance posted bail for her. She later pleaded guilty to the offence in Mulberry, Indiana. She received a suspended sentence of 60 days in jail. The probation for her DUI reportedly ended in 2007.

Trivia:
  • Some of her gigs were sponsored by the motorcycle group ABATE.
  • She is a keen biker — she has a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
  • Overmyer is currently the only contestant from Indiana to become a finalist in American Idol history.
  • Somewhat unusually she is still married to her longtime boyfriend from Indiana

She doesn't have a thread or post (probably for a good reason) ...

Default Reality "Star": Bristol Palin

Bristol Palin is the daughter of the the Republican Politician and possible Presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

She first came to the worlds attention when her mother was governor of the state of Alaska .... her mother was a proponent of 'moral values' ... but aged 18 Bristol, had obviously been showing her bristols to someone because she was announced to be unmarried and pregnant Oddly, this fall from virginal grace, apparently qualifies her to become a public advocate of 'sexual abstinence for unmarried teens', and she is now a paid speaker on the subject of avoiding teen pregnancy. ... isn't this like asking Satan to advocate saintliness? Anyway, hypocrisy aside, it pays well, it was reported in April 2011 that she was paid more than $262,000 by the Candie’s Foundation (a division of the Candie's clothing brand), for her work in 2009 alone.

Some have questioned whether the net effect of Palin's presentations has glamorized rather than discouraged teen pregnancy, noting that the "picture perfect" (and wealthy) imagery of a People magazine spread, seemed to make her "the poster girl for teen momhood" ... but still the money rolls in, as she works on the speakers' circuit asking between $15,000 and $30,000 for each appearance.

TV soon beckoned this high profile fallen angel .... She appeared in an episode of the series, 'The Secret Life of the American Teenager', playing a friend of the fictional character Amy. She said afterwards that "I don't think I'll be doing any more acting in the future". But she was soon back on national TV in the US version of the Fall 2010 season of 'Dancing with the Stars' ... there were allegations of fraudulent online voting using multiple e-mail addresses, after she remained on the show despite poor performances. Things got of hand when she received death threats against her

Palin stated that winning "would be like a big middle finger out there to all the people out there who hate my mom and hate me" ... she finished third.

While that show was being shown she also did a music video as an earth mother figure role, melting the ice. An appearance on TLC travelogue/documentary 'Sarah Palin's Alaska', helping on a commercial halibut fishing boat (fish fingers again?) resulted in her having to apologise for a Facebook profanity, for which she later issued an apology

Amazingly, aged only 20 in June 2011 she released a memoir, co-written with Nancy French, entitled 'Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far', in which she candidly discusses aspects of her personal life, including tensions with the McCain family and losing her virginity. In particualr she claimed that Levi Johnston (the father of her child) 'stole' her virginity while she was drunk ... she was forced to issue a public denial stating that 'I'm not accusing levi of date rape' ... thats a relief.

In May 2011 she was forced to claim that the surgery she had to reduce her jawline wasn't media career driven but for 'medical reasons' .... this claim was later shot to pieces when Johnston's sisters stated that bristol had had platic surgery five times (including Liposuction).

And finally, this September, while filming her latest reality show in LA, she was approached by man whole calls Sarah Aplin a whore, and quick as a flash, Bristol displays the palin wit, by asking if hes a 'homosexual'. The press speculates that this is a set up to generate publicity for the show .... more no doubt to follow on this girl.

Quote:

"Regardless of what I did personally, abstinence is the only 100% foolproof way you can prevent pregnancy".

Arrow Bristol Palin?

Sorry VintageKell I'm going to disagree on this one..

I think she has received such publicity only because of her being Sarah Palin's daughter...

The facts are that nearly half (45%) of the 6.4 million pregnancies in 2004 (the latest year for which we have national data rates) occurred among unmarried women and nearly 38% of all pregnancies in 2004 were to women under the age of 25 - 12% among teens under age 20. By the way, these numbers don't include the 1.22 million pregnancies which ended in abortion.

Are all of these ladies to be considered "Disgraced?" Does this equate to DUI's, rampant drug and/or alcohol abuse, theft, larceny and murder? (The attributes of those who have been awarded the honor of being placed into this thread?)

You said..
"Oddly, this fall from virginal grace, apparently qualifies her to become a public advocate of 'sexual abstinence for unmarried teens',"

Who can better impart the pains and perils of being alone, unmarried and responsible for a child then one who is all of those things?

Beyond that, she has taken responsibility and embraced her position as it is... and, as you pointed out, begun to make a financially secure future for herself and her son. Should this be considered a virtue instead of a fault?

Sorry VintageKell -- but I have to respectfully disagree..... IMHO

Default The Disgrace Is Relative (Part 2)

Quote:

Its all about opinions - and frankly, if anyone doesn't agree with the subject of one post here or there, then they can just not post any thanks. I know that the subjects of many posts that you and others have thanked, have been disagreed with by others who have privately messaged me to explain their disagreements. Does that make you wrong, and them right, or vice versa?

A few points:
  • Firstly, how she got the initial 'fame' is irrelevant ... she has become famous enough to become a minor celeb - The 'Reality' TV and Dance shows, Video appearances etc, qualify her for this post.
  • Secondly the disgrace is relative ... her mother and family were high profile proponents of 'family values and morals', so becoming pregnant and having a child outside of marriage is a disgrace at some level, if only disgracing her mother (else why all the publicity in the US press?).
  • Thirdly, She has benefited from her unmarried pregnancy to make money, garner celebrity (TV dancing and 'reality' shows etc), and promote her own position. The plastic surgery and the stated aim to enter politics later, are also suggestive that she is using the 'fame' for her own ends.
  • Fourthly, I posted a newspaper article mocking her fame issues and disgraces - entitled 'Down the Dumper' (of fame) and this suggests widespread support for my opinion on her life.
  • Finally, your observation on the teen unmarried pregnancy epidemic in the West and the implied suggestion that it isn't a disgraceful state of affairs (at either a personal or societal level), could be read as simply a western liberal view point that condones or at least doesn't condem, and is a view point that many (Christian Evangelists, Tea Party etc) don't agree with. Sheer numbers don't make things morally right (or morally wrong for that matter). Acceptance of unmarried pregnancy is also a western centric viewpoint (and therefore 'cultural imperialism' in many peoples opinion), not shared in Asia, the Muslim world, Africa, South America and other areas, which account for well over three quarters of the worlds population.
I am a culturally equal opportunity poster, and as has been discussed before the disgrace is relative to the circumstances, and is not necessarily applicable to others or other cultures. A trailer park or ghetto teen unmarried pregnancy is merely a sad statistic (or a personal blessing or tragedy etc), while the daughter of a high profile moral crusader (who had wanted to be the President of the USA), getting pregnant out of marriage has some level of disgrace, as well as suggesting a certain level of double standards ... 'do as I say, not as my family does'.

Her family set themselves up as representing a certain set of standards and 'family' values, and she is still doing so as well, therefore I am happy that she is here fairly and squarely.

You have stated your case, and I have exercised my right of reply, lets leave it at that and let visitors agree or disagree as they wish, without clogging the thread up ... I am not interested in discussion threads, so I don't do endless replies and therefore we will have to just disagree.

Default Actress: Carol Haney

Carol Haney was an American dancer and actress. She was single minded in her career choice from the start and she opened a dancing school when she was fifteen years old. Immediately after graduating she went to Hollywood and landed bit parts in movies until she became dance partner and assistant to Jack Cole.

In 1949, Haney was hired by Gene Kelly to be his assistant choreographer on MGM musical films (inc 'On the Town', 'An American in Paris', 'Singin' in the Rain' and 'Invitation to the Dance'). She also worked on her own, dancing with Bob Fosse in the 1953 film version of 'Kiss Me, Kate'. He then recommended her for the part of Gladys Hotchkiss in the stage version of 'The Pajama Game' in 1954. This brought her acclaim and won her a Tony Award and fame beckoned .... but a month into the run she injured her leg, and newcomer Shirley MacLaine took over the role. Film producer Hal Wallis had come to see Haney, saw MacLaine instead and she got the film contract that launched her career, while Haney never became a Hollywood star.

The disappointment of this to her was palpable ... she appeared in a few more stage shows such as 'Ziegfeld Follies of 1956', but had developed paralyzing stage fright. She also did the odd TV game show and movie, notably as Gladys in the film version of 'The Pajama Game' in 1957 but the big chance at fame had gone. She retreated behind the scene and worked as a choreographer .... this included 'Funny Girl' in 1964. These brought her more Tony nominations ... but her problems, often attributed to the 1954 incident had now impacted seriously on her career. She had been drinking heavily for a number of years and had developed diabetes as a consequence. She had been struggling with 'emotional problems' which were exacerbated by the drinking ....

She died suddenly in 1964 aged just 39, and a mere 6 six weeks after the opening of 'Funny Girl' ... the cause of death was given as pneumonia, complicated by the diabetes and her alcoholism.

Trivia:

She dubbed Gene Kelly's taps in the title song on 'Singin' in the Rain'.

Pictures:

She wasn't really a looker, and this also maybe a factor in why she has no thread, and indeed why she never got the global fame she wanted, and which Mclaine got ... life can be tough.

Default Actress: Liu Xiaoqing

Liu Xiaoqing is an actress and businesswoman from China. Unusually for this thread, she started work as a farm labourer, then as a propaganda worker for the Chinese Army and only then as a stage actress for Chengdu Military Drama Group.

She was one of the leading actresses in China in the 1980's but her first film was 'The Great Wall of the South China Sea' in 1976. Her breakthrough role was her portrayal of Cixi, a ruthless (and the last) Empress Dowager of Qing Dynasty, in two films 'Huo Shao Yuan Ming Yuan(The Burning of the Imperial Palace) in 1983, and 'Chui Lian Ting Zheng' (Reign Behind the Curtain) in 1984 .... these performances won her awards (and lets face it, one quarter of all humanity can't be wrong!).

In the 1990's she left acting to focus on business, but returned to acting in the mid 2000's.

However, it was that spell in business that led to her shame ... She became one of the richest people in China and was listed in Forbes' magazine as #45 in the 50 richest Chinese businessmen in 1999. But then disaster she was arrested for tax evasion in connection with her company, Beijing Xiaoqing Culture and Arts Company Ltd in 2002, was fined 7.1 million yuan ($1.1m), and imprisoned for one year!

Trivia:
  • She published a short autobiography 'I Did It My Way' (Wo de lu) in 1983
  • She promoted her business success by publishing a book titled 'From A Movie Star to A Billionaire' .... missing out the 'and to Prison' bit

Default Writer: Elisabeth de Gramont

Elisabeth de Gramont (b. Antonia Corisande Élisabeth de Gramont), was a French writer of the early 20th century. A descendant of Henry IV of France, the daughter of the Duc de Gramont and his wife, née Princesse Isabelle de Beauvau-Craon, she grew grew up among the highest aristocracy; her mother died giving birth to her, and her father remarried to the wealthy Marguerite de Rothschild.

She was married to Philibert, duc de Clermont-Tonnerre and had two daughters in 1909 but had become openly bisexual by the turn of the century, despite the marriage. There have been suggestions that her husband was abusive (violent and tyrannical), but there is no real evidence apart from hearsay and we only have one side of that story.

She started to write (encouraged by her many literary acquaintances) and her first book 'Almanach des bonnes chances de France', in 1930 and a further nine books were published until the last, which was published in 1955 after her death.

As the Duchess de Clermont-Tonnerre she met the American writer and socialite Natalie Clifford Barney on May 1, 1910 (who has an entry here), a date that became for ever their 'anniversary'. In fact they were hardly 'loyal' and had other female lovers (Barney, in particular was in love with the female painter Romaine Brooks, and took many other lovers) .... Elisabeth always included Brooks, when she invited Barney to vacation in the country. Despite Barneys proclivities, they still filed an "unofficial" but, at least to them, binding "marriage contract". This was of course anticipating today's 'civil marriages' in the West but needless to say that would have caused a great public scandal if exposed at the time. The contract stated, in part;

"After nine years of life together, joys and worries shared, and affairs confessed. For the survival of the bond that we believe-and wish to believe-is unbreakable, since at its lowest level of reciprocal emotionalism that is the conclusion reached. The union, sorely tried by the passing years, failed doubly the faithfulness test in its sixth year, showing us that adultery is inevitable in these relationships where there is no prejudice, no religion other than feelings, no laws other than desire, incapable of vain sacrifices that seem to be the negation of life..." ... whilst this didn't bind Barney, at least sexually, they seem to have honoured the sentiment until Elisabeth died in 1954.

Trivia:
  • When she was a child, according to a biographer, "peasants on her farm... begged her not to clean her shoes before entering their houses" (So much for Liberté, égalité, fraternité).
  • She must have agreed with that sentiment because she became known as the "red duchess" for her support of socialism.
  • She was a close friend, and sometimes critic of writer Marcel Proust, whom she had met on June 9, 1903
Pictures:

She apparently wasn't one for the photographs .... pity, she was striking when younger.
