Disgraced Minor Female Celebs

Florence Marly (b. Hanna Smekalova) was a Czechoslovakian born actress. She left her native land to become a student at the Sorbonne University, Paris, where she studied art, literature, and philosophy. While studying, the French film director Pierre Chenal 'discovered her', and he cast her on the spot for her movie debut, in 'L’Alibi'. She was promptly hailed as “the most beautiful girl in the world” in France, and married Chenal who is 15 yrs her senior.

In June 1940 she listens to a warning from a fellow actress called 'Marie Bell', and she flees Paris in her new Packard, on what turns out to be the day before the German Army occupies the city. She has a touch of good luck when the collapsing French government doesn't confiscate her car because the big US car requires too much petrol to to fill up, so they take smaller more economical motors. Strangely she is reported to have undertook this frightening flight from the capital accompanied by two renowned Parisian lesbians.

By 1942 she and Chenal (Chenel was Jewish and was forced to flee occupied France), had arrived in the prosperous country of Argentina where she spent the war years, and she stars in two movies, 'El Viaje Sin Regreso' and 'La Piel de Zapa'. By 1946 they had returned to France, and she was making movies ... in 1947 she is nominated in the Best Actress category at the Cannes Film Festival, for her role in 'Les Maudits' and the film goes on to win the Best Motion Picture award.

Before the communists took over completely in Czechoslovakia, she returned for her swansong there to film 'Krakati', and as a touching gesture she left her salary of almost $100,000 to friends and relatives, who she recognised needed it more than she did. She then leaves Europe, alone (her husband couldn't get the visa permission), and arrives aboard the Queen Elizabeth in New York from Southampton, using the name 'Florence Marly' to try and crack Hollywood.

By 1949 her husband has joined her for a holiday (although he's actually directing the stage version of 'Native Son' in Buenos Aires), and they travel to Chicago, where after returning to Hollywood she declares Chicago is one of the most beautiful cities she’s ever seen ..... compared with what? She is unable accompany the actress Jean Wallace (who will star in Chenal's film version of 'Native Son', which is to be filmed in Argentina in February), to visit her husband in Argentina in January 1950, stating that “I have to start a picture here for Allied Artists in March”. In fact she is loaned out to star with Humphrey Bogart in 'Tokyo Joe', and heads for location filming in Tokyo, where she also films 'Tokyo File 212'.

She and her husband were still working apart, and with some talk of a divorce (especially after he returns to Paris to work, then heads back to Argentina), she says she’s happy if her husband "stays faithful to me in his mind" ... Oh oh! They eventually divorce, and in 1956 she becomes the second wife of Austrian Count Adolf Gundaccar Maria Degenhart, Graf von Wurmbrand-Stuppach (what a mouthful ...) who is approximately 26 years her senior and has a 29-year-old daughter, Leonora, from an earlier marriage. They are apparently divorced a year later, although she continues to use her surname as 'von Wurmbrand' whenever she can.

She works through out the 1950's and 60's in TV series such as 'I Spy'; 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'; 'The Twilight Zone'; and 'Have Gun - Will Travel' and regular if spasmodic film roles, with her final movie being 'Doctor Death: Seeker of Souls' in 1973.

In November 78 as Florence Marly, she died at age 59 in Glendale, California, from a heart attack. She had no children, and was single.

The Problems:

Visa Issues

In 1952 she heads off to Chile for the filming of 'El Idolo' and while trying to renew her visa at the American consulate in Santiago, she is informed that she has been 'blacklisted for being a Communist' and can't be admitted back into the US. She is appalled, but despite protestations of her innocence, she is left stranded in Chile and had to sell her jewelry and clothes to survive.

For a year and a half she stays in Chile before she moves to Mexico, where she pleads for a further two and a half years with the American Consulate for permission to return to the States, until finally a sympathetic female consul named Carey C. White helps her clear her name, and she is allowed to enter the States again. It turns out that she had been mistaken for a Russian nightclub singer named Anna Marly, who should have been 'Blacklisted'

Drugs

Her career suffered while she was out of the US and in 1962 she finds herself arrested under suspicion of helping sell misbranded drugs in Los Angeles, after police find a suitcase full of bottles with drugs in them in her apartment. Her partner in this enterprise is one Dr. Francisco Rosete, 53, who is charged on suspicion of selling cancer cures and youth potions that are misbranded to movie actors and actresses (she was allegedly the 'contact'). On the 22nd of January 1963 in the Los Angeles municipal court, the court found “former actress Florence Marly, 43,” guilty of one count of possessing a misbranded drug. Her legal name is given as Countess Florence von Wurmbrand and in February 63 she is fined $250 and placed on three years probation. Dr. Francisco Rosete is also found guilty of misbranding the drugs.

Trivia:

• She originally wants to become an opera star but doesn't have the voice and gave up on the idea.
• Her husband tells her that if the film version of 'Native Son' is a success, she will get a diamond necklace the following year.

Stockard Channing (b. Susan Antonia Williams Stockard) is a an american actress, who graduated from Radcliffe College, in 1965. She started acting in an experimental Theatre Company in Boston before mainstream work took her to Broadway in in Two Gentlemen of Verona — The Musical. She has since performed on the stage and in both TV and films to some degree of success (nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award and both nominated and winner of a 'Tony' for her stage work). She continues to work to this day.

However, I must confess that her most 'famous' film and stage role in 'Six Degrees of Separation' means absolutely nothing to me and if pushed, I would have only recognised her from 'The West Wing', and as the worlds oldest teenager (she was 33 when she played the part), in the role of high school teenager 'Betty Rizzo' in the hit film musical Grease.

I was in two minds as to whether she is minor enough for this thread, her 'fame' may be greater in the US, than elsewhere, where she is rather minor. If the Mods decide she is in fact not a minor celeb, then I will take this post down myself. Anyway, the reason why she is here at all?

Alcohol and Cars Don't Mix Moment:

Well in December 2004 it was reported that she was jailed for nearly three hours after she was stopped by a California Highway Patrol officer for driving on the shoulder of Highway 101, after driving her Porsche through a police roadblock set up on a Los Angeles freeway at the scene of an accident. She then failed a sobriety test with blood-alcohol levels at .12 and .13. The legal limit in California is .08.

She was eventually charged with two misdemeanor counts of driving while under the influence of alcohol. When it came to court she pleaded 'no contest' (the same as pleading guilty in California), to driving under the influence, and received a sentence of 36 months probation. She was also fined $390 by the Los Angeles courts as part of the standard penalty for a first DUI misdemeanor offense.

Teairra Mari (b. Teairra Maria Thomas) is an American singer-songwriter, actress, model, dancer .... you would have thought that this polymath would have crossed my consciousness but she hasn't She was encouraged by her grandmother (who sang back up for Aretha Franklin) to pursue a musical career which started at the tender age of 16 (which seems to be a common thing with black girl performers). She was signed to Def Jam and released her first album, but after disappointing sales, she was released from her recording contract in the middle of production for her second album. Undaunted she had another try and her second album was finally released in 2010 when she was 19, and her third album is due sometime in 2011 .... can't wait.

She has also had an acting career of sorts, when in 2009 she starred in the yet-to-be-released film 'The Magnificent Cooly-T', and she also appeared in 'Lottery Ticket' which was released in August 2010. She has also started posing for mens mags, but only in her skimpies ... a cell phone pic of her breasts went round the web last year.

Once Again Proving Cars And Drink Don't Mix:

In 2011, she was arrested for drunk driving after crashing her vehicle in Beverly Hills. According to reports, she was driving her silver Infiniti on Santa Monica Boulevard in the early hours of a Friday morning ,when she rear-ended the car in front of her. The police officers reported that she showed signs of intoxication and was arrested around 3:30 a.m.

During the arrest, she reportedly “became combative, resulting in a minor cut to the hand of one of the arresting officers”, and she was charged with DUI and assault of a police officer. She was then taken in to custody and was held on $50,000 bail. According to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, she was later released from police custody at 1:10 p.m when the bail requirement was met.

Gladys Rosa Zender de Meier aka Gladys Zender is a beauty queen from Peru, who was born to a Swiss father (a paper product manufacturer) and a Peruvian mother. With a private religious education, there was nothing unusual in her upbringing (apart from being wealthy, in a very poor country). She won the Reinado de Primavera (Spring Pageant) in her school, and later, the Reinado de los Carnivales (Carnival Pageant) of Miraflores, before being crowned Miss Peru. She was then entered into, and won, the title of Miss Universe of 1957 in Long Beach, California.

As the first Latin American woman to win the Miss Universe title, she became an instant Peruvian celebrity, and when she flew back to Lima on the inaugural flight from the US to Peru from Idlewild International Airport in New York, she was greeted by ecstatic fans ... local reports said that a million of her compatriots lined up along the streets to welcome her. Whenever Gladys appeared, the crowd kept shouting, "Viva Gladys!". "I cried with joy. I never imagined this welcome," remarked the beauty queen during an interview. (those were the days eh?). She was soon featured on the cover of 'Caretas', one of Peru's most-popular news magazines and was later the cover subject of that publication's first all-color cover.

Such was her popular fame that the Peruvian composer Alicia Maguina created a song called "Polka a Gladys Zender" (Polka dedicated to Gladys Zender). It was also titled "La más hermosa" (The most beautiful) and was recorded by the Peruvian group Los Troveros Criollos. Of course it couldn't last, so when she married, she disappeared from the limelight to raise her family. She briefly resurfaced when in 2003 'Caretas' again photographed her family home, showcasing a collection of Incan art, she and her husband had acquired.

Her Oops Moment:

Fairly minor one, but as we have seen before, the morals in the pageant circuit are strange and wondrous in the extreme. So when after being crowned, it was revealed that she was in fact only 17 years and 10 months old (which made her two months under the contest's minimum age requirement of 18), there was much consternation.

This news sparked a flurry of activity by the Pageant officials, and included urgent consultations with Don Fernando Berkemeyer, the Peruvian Ambassador to the United States, who insisted that in Peru, once person passed the 6 months stage they were assumed to be the older age, so 17½ or greater would be legally aged 18 in Peru.

After negotiations lasting until just minutes before the coronation ball, officials decided that Miss Zender was to be left as the winner. As one official later admitted "17 going on 18" didn't meet the legal requirement of being 18 by United States standards, he said that they had to take account that this wasn't just a US contest "After all, this is an international pageant" .... She was also declared free to undertake the promotional contracts required of the winner of the title .... Whew another close shave.

Trivia:

• Her vital statistics were reported as 36-23½-36, 5'7" tall, and weighing 125pounds.
• At one point she wanted to be an aviator.
• In 1982 when the Miss Universe pageant was held in Lima, the Miss Universe Organization presented Gladys with a special trophy to honor her 25th coronation anniversary.
• To give this story context, teamster Jimmy Hoffa was still with us then, and getting off a 'spying' charge ... if only the mob were as forgiving eh?
• That same year, another of our other girls, Miss USA Mary Leona Gage was stripped of her title and disqualified from the semifinals of the Miss Universe pageant after it was revealed she was a married mother of two children.

Elizabeth Ward Gracen (b. Elizabeth Grace Ward) is an American actress. After she graduated from Russellville high school in 1979, she opted for the beauty queen shortcut to success. She won the titles of Miss Arkansas in 1981, and Miss America in 1982

She used her Miss America scholarship money to study acting in New York City before moving to Hollywood to pursue a film and television career, and doors opened .... She made her film debut in 1987, in 'Three for the Road' and was in a number of movies, but mostly in made for TV or TV series ... maybe the highlight was 'Marked For Death' opposite Steven Seagal Her last work seems to have been in 2002, but she has featured in a commercial for match.com

Sex, Sex, sex!

She was rumoured to have had sex with the then governor of Arkansas, Bill Clinton, in 1983. She denied it at first, but in 1998 she admitted to a 'one night stand' ... there was a certain synchronicity between this admission, and her descent into financial woes, which some (but not me) have pointed out. It should also be pointed out that this 'one night stand' has also been claimed as 1982, but I am using her interviews as source. She conceded that the sex was consensual, and not forced as the rumours had suggested for six years during her silence.

She managed to successfully avoided being subpoenaed by Counsel Kenneth Starr by various stratagems, mostly involving going abroad. Clinton has neither confirmed nor denied her statements on the matter. Ironically, Ward was apparently a Reagan supporter at the time of the alleged affair with Clinton.

Nude, Nude, nude!

She is alleged to have received an estimated $100,000 for nude photos in "Pl*yboy in 1992, after her admission of the 'one night stand' .... the money must have helped ease the pain

Money, Money, money!

In December of 1999, she was forced to file for bankruptcy protection, to stop her assets being taken. This was as a result of a boyfriend being imprisoned in France.

Kelli McCarty is an American model and actress. She started her career climb (or descent, depending on your point of view), while still a student at Wichita State University and member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She competed in the pageant circuit and won the Miss Kansas USA competition, and then followed this up by winning the Miss USA beauty contest in 1991. She then entered the Miss Universe pageant, where she was a finalist.

Of course as we have seen before, doors then opened, and in the mid-1990's, after graduating college she went on to pursue a career in acting. She was cast in the TV series 'Dream On' in 1995, and this followed by her movie debut in '364 Girls A Year' in 1996. This was followed by more TV work, interspersed with movie roles (the latter of these being mostly of the soft-core adult type), but the parts were somewhat intermittent up until a fairly long running part in the TV series 'Passions' from 1999 until 2006. After 2006, her parts were more guest roles in TV series combined with the odd movie role, with her last part being in 'Fortune's 500' in 2011.

Oops Behaviour:

Well as we have remarked before a girls gotta eat .... so from 2000 onwards, and in a style similar to that of Angelique Pettyjohn as she got older (and at the age of 31 parts were gonna be harder to get mainstream), she began appearing in soft porn films. She then went fully into porn aged 39, when she 'starred' in and performed hardcore sex scenes, in the adult film 'Faithless: From Beauty Queen to Porn Queen' in 2009. She now has her own adult web site (which has previews )

Helen Morgan is a Welsh model. She worked in a bank after leaving schooling and was entering modelling competitions on a part time basis. In 1974, she won the Miss Wales and Miss United Kingdom titles. She only entered the Miss Wales competition after she was paid £30 as a last-minute stand-in when another competitor dropped out.

She represented Wales in the 1974 Miss Universe pageant, where she finished first runner up to another of our girls Amparo Muñoz of Spain. When Muñoz resigned as Miss Universe before the end of her reign (she was involved in a slapping, pimping and money scandal), the crown was not offered to Morgan or any other runner up.

She also entered the Miss World competition in 1974, and was declared the winner with the first runner-up Anneline Kriel of South Africa. The publicity she received allowed her to resign from the bank, and undertake a brief career in modeling, supplemented with small TV and film parts. She later moved to Spain with her family, where she currently resides, returning briefly in 2004 to help judge the Miss Wales competition.

Scandals:

She was forced to resign from her Miss World crown just four days after her victory, after the press discovered that she was a single unmarried mother with an 18 month old son. Strictly speaking this did not violate the competition rules (which only stated that entrants must be unmarried), she was made to resign, as an unmarried mother was not deemed suitable (nowadays, of course, they would struggle to find an entrant who wasn't an unmarried mother ).

She was threatened with being a named party in a divorce (how innocent the times were then), which would have caused her to be stripped of all her remaining titles but the legal action was later dropped, this allowed her to retain her other titles.

Trivia:

• Morgan became only the second Welsh woman and the fourth UK representative to win the Miss World competition in 1974
• In 2004, Morgan agreed to judge the 2004 Miss Wales competition in Swansea.

Ashley Harder is a graduate of Camden Catholic High School in Cherry Hill who spent much of her high school years modelling and acting ... these assignments included shoots for Versace, Pepsi and rather presciently various bridal magazines. She has done OK out of this work, because as from December 2005 she has worked for WPSG, a CW TV affiliate in Philadelphia as one of the 3 hosts of the show "The CW Crew" doing 'on-air work' and studio appearances.

But, and you knew that there had to be one .....it could all have gone so badly wrong .... because in 2007 she entered and won the title of Miss New Jersey USA 2007 and was preparing to compete for the nationally televised Miss USA title in 2007, when she discovered that she was pregnant. Miss USA contest rules prohibit participants from being pregnant or ever having given birth. She was no longer eligible for the Miss USA Title and therefore resigned her Miss New Jersey USA crown in January 2007.

Élodie Gossuin is a French former beauty pageant winner and municipal politician. While still at school she won several local beauty contests, and while training to be a nurse, she won the "Miss Picardie" beauty contest in November 2000. This win allowed her to compete for the "Miss France" 2001 title which she won. In the same year in Beirut, Lebanon, rather oddly she won the "Miss Europe" contest.

All these wins brought her much publicity and press coverage in France and she began working as a model and doing publicity appearances. In 2004, she embarked on a political career as the representative for Conseil Régional de Picardie (regional council) in her native Picardie region. She is in the 'Union for a Popular Movement party'. She then broke into TV shortly after her election victory, when she appeared in the French reality TV show, 'La Ferme Célébrités'.

Rumours and Lies:

A rumor circulated by a French language website, called "L'Examineur", claimed that Mlle Gossuin was a 27-year-old transvestite cabaret dancer called Nicolas Levanneur ... this just days after her winning the Miss France 2001 contest. The rumour apparently circulated for months, with international press coverage, until just a few days before the 'Miss Universe' contest, when the editor of the website that published the original article, stated publicly that the story was a complete fabrication. Strangely she went on to only become one of the top 10 semi-finalists at the Miss Universe pageant that year .... she had previously won every contest she had entered that year .... dirty tricks or just coincidence

• At the Miss Universe 2001 pageant, Gossuin was a top 10 semi-finalist, which was the only contest that year she didn't win.

Rolonda Watts is an American actress, producer, voice over artist, novelist, motivational speaker, and television and radio talk show host. In other words she is another of the polymaths who I had never heard of until researching for this thread. She is a graduate of Spelman College and started her career as a general assignment reporter at WFMY-TV in Greensboro, North Carolina and she later worked at WNBC.

She then started her own talk show 'Rolonda' which lasted 3 years until she 'folded it to keep her integrity' ..... She then headed to Hollywood to pursue a career in acting. In 1997 she was cast as 'Vivica Shaw' in 'Sister, Sister', a role she played for six episodes. This was followed by guest starring roles in dozens of television shows, including 'The West Wing', 'JAG', 'The District Yes', 'Dear', and soap operas 'Days of our Lives' and 'The Bold and The Beautiful'. She is now apparently awaiting the release of several of her films ... so maybe fame is beckoning?

She is currently the Announcer and radio and TV promo voice of the courtroom show 'Judge Joe Brown' ..... which is quite ironically funny really.

Judge not, that ye be not judged:

She was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Hollywood on the morning of March 5, 2011 after attending the NAACP Image Awards according to CBS News. She was booked into jail but she is now out of jail on $15,000 bail and was due back in court to plead on March 30th. If she is convicted of DUI in California, she could be facing criminal penalties that include imprisonment, probation, fines, community service, license suspension and attendance to alcohol education classes. ..... I have not been able find out what she pleaded, but I assume that it was not guilty.

She's also something of a cougar ..... in 2007 the 48 yr old Watts was reported to have moved in with her 28 year old boyfriend, former NFL player Ataveus Cash.
