I'm really stunned by Phil Hughes' death. Quite speechless. A damn good batsman and, from what I've seen and heard, a damn good bloke too.
After a period of shock, there's bound to be discussion of safety, much like Senna dying triggered various changes to Formula One. Change the structure of the ball to make it less hard but retain the same bounce and swing? Change the design of helmets? .

I was actually moved to tears for the poor man; I also hope there is someone looking after Sean Abbott. The burden he will carry to the end of his days. In the 70s when the Windies were at their fastest it used to sell newspapers speculating that this would happen, and it never did.
As a lifelong cricket fan this is the darkest day in the history of the game. |

The impact of the ball split the artery in that part of his neck and the hospital has never seen this type of injury from a ball. Think there is only 1 other reported case in the world.

RIP Phillip, condolences to his family
Also feel for Sean Abbott, it will be hard for him to continue after this tragedy, he will need a lot of counseling. |

A very sad day down here in OZ. I recall listening on the national broadcaster, the ABC, his first test in South Africa in 2009 and then the second with a hundred in both innings. A really nice young lad who was making another comeback bid for the national side. R.I.P. Phil.

A very sad day for the sport.
I am of course sad for the Hughes family, and their loss, and my thoughts go out to them, but particularly I am sad for Sean Abbot at this time. I do hope that he can find it within himself to continue. Of course someone would say that this is what Phil Hughes would have wanted, and quite possibly Phil's sister has already said this to Sean, but I am absolutely certain that it is what he would have wanted. I am deeply saddened for all those involved for their loss, and for the sport. RIP Philip Hughes.

Very sad, but this is what fast bowlers have been threatening for decades, OK they never really wanted to knock your block off in reality, but if you keep trying to hit a batsman on the head one day it will go bad, and now it has, and not for the first time

I've been up in the attic and put my old bat out for Phil. I also found an award I won for individual performance of the season once 76no, two catches, and 10 for 29. My award.....the match ball mounted on a piece of wood. I put that out as well, don't really know why.
Must have been a poor season.......
