Default Tmobile 5g home internet oddness

For a couple of reasons I decided to try to switch to Tmobile's home internet device. First device was defective but second one started up fine and connected to their wireless 5g network. Connected the laptop to it by wifi and speed test was really unimpressive. Switched to hard wired and got less that 30 mbs at internet speed test. I thought that would be okay but download speed from FileFactory went from 10 mbs to 400 kbs.

Before taking it back I figured I should plug it into my firewall and see how bad it got. Firewall is OpenWRT computer with the software configured to VPN to NordVPN. Tested internet speed and it was over 100 mbs. Downloaded a file from FileFactory at about 9 mbs. YouTube behaves great

Going to test for a couple of days but looks like going through a firewall improves performance, Any ideas why?

read your t&c

Streaming is throttled on nearly all connections by policy. Time of day determines your FRACTIONAL connection.

8pm get 160kbps
1am gets full advertised 30mbps

your firewall only effects your own place. It does not change the isp at all, or its connections. A firewall basically builds a house around your network with a bunch of doors. Some doors are always closed and locked. Some doors only open out, some doors open in and out. But that firewall only protects your own house. And only if you lock and unlock the right doors. AND your firewall/house only protects you and controls doors it knows about. microsoft (since XP) has an entire complement of windows/skylights/holes in the fucking walls, called "Teredo" which is "phone home" (today they call it telemetry) that ignores your firewall altogether and phones home. I used to make a decent living working with it daily. Today, I'm sure their shit is waaaaaay better than in 2002. Entire LAYERS of network traffic that dont use tcp/ip, or udp, or ssh, or ntp, or netbeui.

Then you have ipv4 vs ipv6
https://www.theregister.com/2022/03/...ndard_enables/

That's fucking you as well.

Is there a hope of network security for normal people on the interrnet today?
I really doubt it. But staying as far away from commercial software is a good start. Then it's all about LAYERS of protection you build around yourself.

Of course, you're basically fucked from the outset, since your isp is busy logging everything you do that isnt on your very own VPN (not commercial vpn's, you cant be that stupid today. YOU have to control BOTH ends of your vpn, then re-encrypt at the outer end before it goes out into the wilds to your destination. And all that only works if your vpn software hasnt been back doored by the abc.govs.

Also, keep in mind that EVERY US cell carrier has standing agreements to monitor and report to abc.govs without regulation.

So basically almost all of the internet browsing and services are relying on Google. Worst part is what that guy experienced on his website, being blacklisted by Google and not being able to find a way of fixing it.

Blocking Google out of your life could be a good thing if your means of living do not rely on the internet. Even if you manage to do it, you'll find yourself out of most (if not all) of the systems modern society rely on for everything every day, and depending on nobody but yourself. Which I imagine is a lot more work than anyone is willing to do.

PS. I hope we're not wandering too much out of topic here.

Strange thing happened just now.

My actual XFCE Thunar crashed.
That's my first actual non-config/screwing around or installing crash since last summer. I copied 503 MB of icons from my stores drive to my backup drive, and Thunar crashed and could not be restarted, had to restart the whole system to get things working again.

I was completely taken aback. Sorta stunned even.

503 mb of icons? Typically icons are small image files. Wouldn't that be like a million individual files?

Are your image/video thumbnails in that number?

nope. that's just my personal ~/.icons folder zipped up to move to my /usr/local/share/icons/ folder. All my thumbnails are stored on a /tmpfs folder.

I got tired of the new qt6 stuff not looking for icons in my ~/ so I just moved them to the system icons folder. I have a couple hundred icon themes and about 60 system themes and libs. (I get bored). With 4 TB of space I got plenty of room.

xfce-look.org is my friend, lol.

Over the past 10 days, I have been getting the following Livepatch update for Linux Ubuntu 20.04 (on both my desktop and laptop).

I have installed it several times, and it keeps coming back. Cannot decide if it is a new tweak each time, or if it is the same one (over and over again).

Wondering if it keeps coming back because I do not have a Ubuntu Pro subscription at Livepatch .

Suggestions?

do you have synaptic package manager installed?
If so, let's go do a comparison of installed versions vs update versions.

Personally, I dont like auto updater tools, I wanna know that what happens is what I want to happen, not what someone else suggests/says. (But I realize that makes ME the sole dickhead that fucked it all up). I cant bitch (scream and throw things, yes) if I'm the one who ignore/tldr the "DONT FUCKING DO THIS DUMBASS" warning. (I do sometimes just to see what will happen).
