Here is a stalwart of the early 70s California porn scene: Nora Wieternik.



She appeared in many productions, both in features and loops. She is instantly recognizable (long brown hair, full figure, unique breasts) yet she has been commonly and consistantly misidentified by fans and distributors alike. As she does not yet have her own thread here on the VEF, I felt it was only proper that she have one.





Magazine pictures of the young lady seem to be hard to come by, and I must start the thread with precious few photos (vidcaps, mostly) and a whole lot of text. Fortunately, she is well represented here on the forum; many of her movies have been posted.

The following article was posted by me November 20, 2012. Since that time, The IAFD has updated its entries concerning Nora Wieternik and Mycle Brandy. I leave this post as it was, if only as a detective story (and after all the effort, I hate to take it down)...

I submit that many of us are in error.




This is a familiar early 1970s performer. Almost always seen with long straight brown hair, she is also recognizable by her distinctive breasts.

This performer is known to many as "Mycle Brandy." I believe I can safely say this ID is erroneous.

"Mycle Brandy" is a widespread and commonly used moniker for this performer of the early 70s; VEF members know her by this name, Something Wierd Video has had several tape releases that include this name in their packages' printed synopses, the IAFD credits most or all of her appearances by this name, and many websites and movie reviews use the name as well.

I'd never heard it. I'd always known her as Nora Wieternik. I was very impressed (as a teenager) by her photo in an article about the early-70s adult film industry that appeared in Playboy, Oct '71, pg 146:



"Graffitti Productions, a Los Angeles firm specializing in hard-core fare--from stag reels to full-length features--set out to create a blue-movie parody with Flesh Gordon, a camp take-off of the venerable comic strip and subsequent movie serial. Along the way, however, producers William Osco and Howard Ziehm claim they had a change of heart; by excising explicit scenes such as the one below, with Jason Williams as Flesh and Nora Wieternik as Queen Amoura, they hope to earn at least an R and perhaps a GP rating, releasing the film by December."

Years later, the Blue Vanities company lists her as "Nora Weiternik" on several of their tapes/discs. So I was a bit surprised that, when I'd ID'd her in loop, another forum member corrected me: I was told that her name was not "Nora Wieternik," but "Mycle Brandy." OK, I make lots of mistakes, so I looked it up. As of this posting: In all of her appearences on the VEF, she is credited as "Mycle Brandy." IAFD credits "Mycle Brandy" with 19 feature appearances between 1970 and 1975. Of these, the only one (I can find) with an on-screen credit that reads "Mycle Brandy" appears in Flesh Gordon:



Note that the screen credits shown here do not indicate who plays what. And that, I believe, is the source of the error.

Both names appear on the film, indicating that they are two different performers.

Note the text in the photo above: "...Nora Wieternik as Queen Amoura..."

IMDb.com credits the actress' appearences as Nora Wieternik for most of the same 19 features, including Flesh Gordon. Interestingly, on Flesh IMDb lists "Mycle Brandy" as "Amora, Queen of Magic," and Ms. Wieternik is listed without a character name. Mostly, her IMDb titles show her as "uncredited" and with a couple as "Nora" (and one as "Lora", which may or may not be an actual character name, or a mis-heard name as the result of the usual bad audio in 70s porn). "Nora Wieternik" may be her real name, rather than a nom-de-porn; in those films of hers that were basically just wall-to-wall group gropes, such as The Erotic Artist (1971), other cast members refer to her as "Nora." Vocally, she has somewhat of a Germanic accent, and the surname "Wieternik" would certainly fit the description of "Germanic."

IAFD credits "Nora Weiternik" and "Nora Wieternik" (note spelling) separately, giving the "ie" spelling two credits -- Hollywood Babylon and Flesh Gordon, and the incorrect "ei" spelling credit for four Blue Vanities appearances.

So who is Mycle Brandy?

Granted, many many websites credit "Mycle Brandy" as "Queen Amora," which I believe highlights the magnitude of the error:
Mycle Brandy is a man.

Several websites/forums/etc mention "Mycle Brandy" as having played "Prince Precious" in Flesh Gordon (for which IMDb credits Lance Larsen):

Pharosproductions.com, in The Art Of Stop Motion Animation credits Mycle Brandy as Prince Precious (and Lance Larsen as Amora!)
and this:
Cultmovieforums.com: theflyjd posted 8/30/2009: "These guys have it all wrong! Mycle Brandy is not a chick! He's a male actor who was featured in the movie Flesh Gordon as Prince Precious. This chick featured in the movie Geek was Queen Amora in the same movie. If Mycle Brandy was in the movie Geek it was as a male model."

To Google "Mycle Brandy" would find an actor/musician/four-time stroke survivor who maintains a website heralding his walk across America, done to bring attention to the plight of stroke victims and their rehabilitation.



He is: a) an actor/musician, b) a long-time resident of southern California, and c) approximately 61 years old -- which would put him at the right profession, location, and age for "Prince Precious" in 1971.

Although the headshot in the banner above is probably several years old (he is much heavier now) and also several years post-1971, there are facial similarities:




General features, eye color, mole on cheek, ridge over nose... add almost 40 years and several pounds...

And finally, there is the efilmcritic.com review of Flesh Gordon. In the comments section following the review there are two notable entries:

Sadly, the IUMA does not seem to host a picture. But his credits there include a recently released music CD that is also listed in the credits of the cross-country walker's website, establishing that this is the same person.

Naturally, one might comment that, as she's been referred to as "Mycle Brandy" for so long, that we should just continue with that as her name. I believe that this would knowingly perpetuate an error, which isn't what we do here as porn historians.

I realize that I may be tilting at windmills here, as there would be a lot of "error" to correct:
-- The iafd is wrong. (not the first time)(As I stated above, the IAFD has corrected their entries.)
-- Several SWV tapes/discs' printed box covers and online descriptions are wrong.
-- Many posts here on the VEF are wrong, as their sources (above) are wrong.
-- Several more websites, lists, databases, etc., based on information from SWV or iafd, are wrong. (more fruit of the poisonous tree)

To sum up:

Mycle Brandy is male, who (as an actor) played "Prince Precious" in Flesh Gordon.
Nora Wieternik is the female, who (as a porn starlet of the early 70s) played "Queen Amora" in Flesh Gordon.

It is this female, Nora Wieternik, who due to ambiguous on-screen credits in her most famous film appearance, has been consistantly mis-identified with the name of her male co-star, Mycle Brandy, long after her film career had ended.

Obviously, models have individually gone by multiple names during the course of their porn careers; here on the forum it's often a "take your pick -- she went by that name, too" situation. So, then, "Mycle Brandy" would be just another alias, much like "Paula Principe" (Hard Action, 1971) or "Me Me" (Daddy, 1971). But I would argue that this situation is different; it's somebody else's name (of a different gender) that she never went by -- it's not her name, not her stage name, not an alias. I propose that if we're going to remember her, let's at least get her name right. Frankly, the actual Mycle Brandy would probably appreciate it.

UPDATE -- I have discovered that the IAFD has changed their listings for both Mycle Brandy (one credit: Prince Precious) and Nora Wieternik (24 titles, as listed above). Spelled 'Wieternik' right, too.

Many thanks to the IAFD for the corrections; I feel like something was accomplished. But more so, many thanks to whichever member of the VEF that passed my argument along to the editors at the database. Someone did that part of the job for me... I thank you for that.
