Some time ago, I watched a news story about modern day harems. Since holding innocent women as sex slaves is illegal, a number of Arab sheiks now pay beautiful women to be their harem. The younger brother of the Sultan of Brunei was one such sheik. In his "harem" were 30 paid young lovelies. At one time, Rebecca Ferratti was one of them. This news story was filmed a few years after she returned to the US. When it was suggested that she had been a prostitute, she got pissed off, and denied it. She got very defensive about it, and claimed that what she had done was no different from what a married woman does. Her reasoning was that a married woman provides sex and other comforts to her husband, and, in return, is provided for. She simply did the same. However, to my knowledge, any time a woman accepts money, or any other gifts, in exchange for sex, that means that she has engaged in prostitution. Also, she conveniently refused to see that when a husband divorces his wife, he must provide alimony until she remarries. However, if a sheik expels a concubine, she isn't entitled to anything.

Yeah, that story broke in the late 90's, 1997 i believe. I read about it in swedish newspapers in 2004, when Brunei came in to the spotlight because of a visit from the Swedish king. Aftonbladet, swedens biggest newspaper, did a rather good piece on the subject, in which they quote Rebecca several times. It is in swedish though, and so most likely unreadable for people here... A quick look at Google reveals some other articles in which she is quoted on the Brunei period. See e.g.

Note that there are some differences in the recollections of Rebecca compared with some other Brunei Harem girls, e.g. Shannon Marketic, which seems to emphasize the sexual aspect of the Harem. Rebecca of course have reasons to paint things in a different light, but her statements make more sense in context. Unlike what most westerners believe, a royal Harem is not foremost a sexual menagerie. For most inhabitants it is only potentually so, in that the sovereign may choose to give his attention to that or other girl. But the protocols and customs are strict, and only a few are actually chosen. The rest are on hold, or simply there for other resons than to copulate with. One could compare it more with a sort of conneiseurs collection - you want to have girls for every fancy, in case the occasion occurs. The fact that Rebecca was even allowed to learn polo during her stay for example, which seems to be corroborated by photo evidence, points in this direction.

Polo is a very masculine sport in that culture, and it would seem that Rebecca was considered as something of a "man-woman" in that setting, however strange that would seem to some of us... (Would I want to be riden by those strong, perfect thighs... you bet!).
Not likely to arouse some effete, decadent prince though. one whom she probably could kill with her bare hands (she is after all a martial arts junkie), at least not without some element of fear. I doubt he could even "perform" in her presence.

(A sparring-match with Rebecca should be every mans dream)

There is a program about the Brunei Harem, featuring Rebecca in it, which I would really like to get hold of...

PS. An Odalisk was a top concubine in the Ottoman turkish Imperial Harem, one which was allowed to consort with the Sultan.
