First Magazines-buying experiences!

Can anybody remember the first mags they bought? Mine was Men Only.

I can remember the trepidation going into the newsagent, scanning the shelf, taking a deep breath and going for it!

I never looked my age well into my 20s and it always caused problems. Can remember being thrown out of one newsagent as stupidly my mate went in, bought parade, got away with it, so I chanced my luck and immediately was chucked out!

Can also remember phrases like “are you really old enough to have that” and replying “well I am 16”; and women behind the counter sizing you up and down as you breathed and sweated heavily with £1.50 in your sweaty hand! Or getting away with it only to find a girl you went to school with comes into the shop and you’re suddenly hiding the latest copy of Mayfair in rail enthusiast! Then of course you had to sneak them in to your parents house. I had a large wax jacket with a huge back pocket for that!

Anybody have similar experiences back in the day? Some newsagents never seemed to care so long as they got their £1.50 others you def took a chance in

I'd left school before I bought my first mag - although I'd read other people's copies - and was over 6 feet tall by then, so never had any problems with being refused service.

I sometimes used to read the 'Walter Smutty' articles in Fiesta, but am pretty sure I never looked like that stereotype of a pervert, even though I enjoyed a wank over a sexy girl as much as anyone.

I used to buy The Guardian in print media days, as well as a range of other magazines, but when gearing up for my first copy of Mayfair, back in 1989, I decided not to 'mix business with pleasure'. Rather than try to hide it in a newspaper or another magazine, I somehow managed to tough it out, show the mag to the guy at the till, and hand over my money. I do remember making sure I had exactly £1.75.

I bought girlie magazines regularly after that, but can still remember the first time I reached up to the top shelf. Incredible feeling really, as if I was reaching out to touch something electric. I have a copy of that first mag which I still masturbate over.

I didn't actually buy my first magazine, I pinched it. I think I was 15.
I was working Saturdays in a small supermarket in Tollcross, Edinburgh. I got £1 per Saturday. I used to go across the road to a newsagent to get a copy of The Times, as I had a cheap student subscription. As I walked out with my copy of The Times, I noticed that there was a stand right next to the door, on the left, full of copies of Playboy - no top shelf in those days.

After walking past these desirable items for a couple of Saturdays, I then grabbed one on the way out.

It was an eye opener in more than one sense. Obviously it had attractive ladies, but no more revealing than the hedge porn that I had gathered. It was the ads that astonished me. I knew nothing of America at that point and I was just amazed how different it appeared to be.

I grabbed a few more over the following months, until the supermarket I worked at closed, and I was made redundant for the first, but certainly not the last time.

I guess my first was Playboy, as I thought it's not so rough so I may be able to buy it. So I bought it from some thrift shop. I must have been around 14 or 15. I can't remember anything else but there were some bondage images of Betty Page which were totally hot and made me think "so sex can be also like that". They were absolutely hottest in that magazine, otherwise it was quite lame. It was the only Playboy I ever bought.

I'm sure mine was a copy of Big Ones, bought from a newsagent owned by the family of a girl I went to school with. It took about three trips to the shop to get a time when she wasn't working there all I could buy it.

I reckon this was probably around 1990 or 91. Not sure of the exact issue, but it had a light blue background on the cover.

The first magazine that I bought was Mayfair Vol.10 No.5 and I still have it.

The pictorial of Lena Norberg from that issue remains strongly imprinted on my memory.

This was because I had to content myself with, say, an Amateur Photographer from the next shelf down, that could get past the domestic authorities.

Back in the 80s, WHSmith used to sell Mayfair, and it was normally in full view on the shelf, along with, I think, Playboy and Penthouse.

I used to stare up at and read the leading text on the cover, and always remembered this issue, proclaiming 'The Headmaster's Nude Wife'.

Enjoying this kind of cheek, I fell in love with the mag before I'd even bought one.

And thanks to effCup, here it is again.

I must try to find a back issue one day, just to see what I missed!

I’ve done that several times. I can distinctly remember mags I bought in my youth and I’ve managed to track down. Def brings back nostalgic memories and still makes me horny as f****!

Yep, I can identify with that!

Once I’d I left home, I didn’t need to 'hover' in front of the top shelf any more, and I started buying Mayfair. For years, ‘grown ups’ had denied me the pleasure of getting off over photos of beautiful women – now I was going to make up for it!



I think I chose Mayfair because it was the mag I usually gazed at on the top shelf. Plus, where I lived, there weren’t any ‘corner shop’ newsagents that sold the racier stuff.

In those days Mayfair was a quality mag, and had a huge circulation. So it seemed kind of respectable.

I bought my first issue one Saturday, in a Southampton newsagents which had very tall ceilings. That meant the top shelf was a long way up, even for me at 6 feet tall. I certainly couldn't pretend I was doing anything other than reaching up for a mag – and my heart would have been pounding like a sledgehammer.

I admit I bought this issue for the stunning cover photo of (as I learnt later) Jo Phillips.

But back in the 80s, I used to watch a lot of snooker on TV. So it was an added bonus to take a peek at 'Doug Mountjoy's Nudest daughter'.

Yvette Mountjoy didn't disappoint - this photo of her on page 29 was a real treat.



‘Entertainment for men’ it certainly was.

I just think I was lucky to be buying mags when there was so much great stuff out there.

Yep. Well we went to the local adult store in my area and my buddy Ryan went in and bought it. I wanted Playboy but he came out with Penthouse, this issue. I remember being a little annoyed. BUT in hindsight it was brilliant because I have become a huge Monique Gabrielle fan. She looked so amazing in this issue and in her centerfold.

Then I turned 18 a few months later and bought my own. I bought the Playboy Book of Lingerie with Margie Murphy on the cover. I saw Jody Hoskins in there and fell in total love with her. Her eyes just took over my soul. Good God. This was the photo.

I started following her appearances after that. Clearly many guys thought like I did because she kept showing up in the issues and Playboy knew she was popular.
