Civil War

War Wage

PRAISE: Director and writer Alex Garlands film about a dystopian future America, and a team of military-embedded journalists races against time to reach Washington, D.C., before rebel factions descend upon the White House is effective and then some. I liked how the layers are slowly but surely pulled back on what effect the new civil war has had on America in this movie. Those that take advantage of the war and those that simply tune it out. I did enjoy the vibe of the various characters in the film portrayed by Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, and Nick Offerman all turning in strong performances ranging from world weary, pessimistic, to wide eyed determined and ambitious. As the movie played out I kept thinking would their actually be reporters and photojournalism actually covering a near apocalyptic situation......probably.
Some parts of the movie definitely reminded me of get the story no matter what movies like The Year of Living Dangerously and Under Fire.
There's a standout scene in the movie that displays just how bad things can get when division takes place on a grand scale i found it to be extremely intense and harrowing.
There's disturbing imagery throughout the movie some that are truly not for the faint of heart. Action sequences towards the end of the film were very involving.

PROBLEMS: I would have liked a bit more backstory on how things turned into brother against brother, and who was accountable. I was waiting for the one year earlier caption to hit the screen. There are a few predictable moments.

Scale of 1 to 10 an 8½

Alligator (1980)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080354

Based on an urban myth about gators in New York sewers.
1968 and it opens with an alligator wrangling show gone wrong as one of the crew slips and is attacked.
A young girl, Marisa persuades her parents to buy her a baby alligator but that night her angry father flushes it down their toilet where it ends up in the city sewers.
1980 and the police are investigating body parts and dead dogs found in the sewers. The dogs seem to be much larger than expected and it turns out a local pet owner is selling them to a local pharmaceutical company to be experimented on, the dead bodies are left in the sewers and guess who has been feeding on them?
The dogs had been injected with growth hormones and as a result the gator has grown massive, not only that it has developed a taste for human flesh. The pet shop owner is the first on screen victim of the gator, so no great loss.
Two police officers, including David Madison the lead investigator are searching the sewers when the gator appears and attacks them. The sewer outlet is locked and officer Kelly is dragged away by the beast.
After Madison is released from hospital a local scandal rag reporter questions a nurse and hears Madison was having nightmares about an alligator in the sewers. So of course he has to look into it further and the gator catches him unaware as his camera flashes away.
A police operation to drive it out of the sewers works but not as they intended and the gator smashes through into the city streets.
The mayor brings in a big game hunter to track the beast down and sidelines Madison who investigates how it could have grown so large. However he upsets the pharmaceutical company whose boss is the mayor's friend so Madison is taken off the force altogether.
The gator makes its way up the canal towards a posh wedding reception for the son of the pharmaceutical boss and other rich undesirables Does it like the taste of rich food and if so, how much can it eat? It decides to open the feast by snacking on the serving staff and whipping people through the air using its tail. Then it starts on the more deserving hors oeuvres.
Of course there has to be a maybe there's gonna be a sequel ending

Terror Express (1980) aka La ragazza del vagone letto
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0124899

Three psychotic vermin take a night train and terrorise those unlucky to have chosen to travel that night.
What starts as low level immature annoyances very quickly ratchets up to become life threatening when they get hold of a policeman's gun when his back is turned. The women are all fair game for their lust and the men unable to fight back until ....

10 Rillington Place (1971) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066730

IMDb plot: What happened to the women at 10 Rillington Place? The story of British serial killer John Christie, who committed most or all of his crimes in the titular terraced house, and the miscarriage of justice involving Timothy Evans.

[First Viewing]

Was looking for a 70's crime film and damn did I stumble upon a doozy. Knew nothing about it going in, but holy crap was this a dark story, based on real events too. Richard Attenborough gives off Hannibal Lector vibes as a WWII era monster who tears a young family's life to shreds. Yikes. Chilling to the max. 8/10

Default Transylvania 6-5 o o o

I will warn you now, it is an intentional 1980's Z movie. Pick a horror trope. T 6-5000 does it in spades.

*Cliche's were harmed during the filming of this movie.*

From Jeff Goldblum - cynic, to Ed Bagley jr - sap, to Carol Kane, to Berzonkers, I never counted on berzonkers, to Kramer the houseboy, complete with dildo rockinghorse (I wish I were kidding). Principal Rooney is here. And Radu.

Think the Munsters meet Clue, meet 80s character actors.
Budget? $5, maybe $6. It's from eastern Europe. (It has to be).
It's hilariously bad in a fun way.
Watch it drunk, it helps.
Still better than any haunted house movie in the last 25 years.
Every monster movie needs a nymphomaniac vampire.
Remember, I warned you, this movie has no dignity. None at all. Other movies try not to sink to this level. This movie revels in it, then heads straight down hill.
It's only missing 1 thing. No Tim Curry. Seriously. If they could have gotten him just for a cameo, this would have been the princess bride on classic monster movies. He could have played the disembodied head. that would have been awesome. or the mirror on the wall.

AH! I've got it.

It's a Mel Brooks monster/haunted house movie!

ps. You WILL want the ringtone.

Rating? Five Oh-Oh-Oh out of 13, of course. It's FUN.

Hallows' Eve (2013)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2106440

A group of spiteful teens pick on Eve as she is collecting pumpkins for Halloween and chase her into the path of a tractor.
10 years later and on the same site they are setting up a Bates Motel Halloween theme house and those who were responsible for Eve's disfigurement are amongst those attending on Halloween. Three of the boys, now fully fledged bullies spy on Eve as she is getting dressed and see her without the mask she wears. Eve is upset by them but someone is out to get revenge.
And there is a twist or two at the end

WIKIPEDIA Entry

I am a little big torn about this one: the actors/actresses seems themselves not to take too seriously - on the other hand there is this stupid/ridiclious overacting...

Overall i give it 6 out of 10

Finally watched "Oppenheimer" (2023)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3x68dsT63uQ Trailer

Don't know much about Oppenheimer or the Atomic bomb - don't know how much shown is true - but it was entertaining.

I liked Robert Downey Jr. as that scheming piece of shit Strauss. I thought Emily Blunt was being wasted until she shined as a smart, vindicative bitch near the end of the film.

As stated in the Wiki:

Among its many accolades, Oppenheimer won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Murphy and Best Supporting Actor for Downey. It also won five Golden Globe Awards (including Best Motion Picture – Drama) and seven British Academy Film Awards (including Best Film), and was named one of the top ten films of 2023 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute.

Well-deserved praise.

I do fear the end of the movie is true.

Give it 4 of 5 - some nudity so maybe 4.5 out of 5 - some D cups would make me rave about it more.

Some years ago, I went to a party not far from this location and the following day walked around to have a look at the house with a friend, but everything had gone.

This explains a fair bit about Rillington Place:
