Gugu Mbatha-Raw
http://imdb.com/name/nm1813221/
Gugu Mbatha-Raw, born Gugulethu Mbatha-Raw in 1983 in Oxford, England is an English actress, best known for her semi-regular role as "Jenny" in the fifth series of Spooks and series 3 of the critically acclaimed sci-fi series Doctor Who in which she portrayed the role of "Tish Jones". She more recently won the lead female role in Lost creator J. J. Abrams's new spy drama, Undercovers. Ms. Mbatha-Raw stars as Samantha Bloom, wife of Steven Bloom (Boris Kodjoe) and one of the best operatives the CIA has known. Samantha co-owns and runs a small catering company based in Los Angeles. Her tenacity, knife skills, and exacting standards make her the iron fist of this family business. When you add in her extensive repertoire of foreign languages, aptitude for picking locks, and ability to seduce any bad guy, you understand why secretly, Sam was one of the best spies the CIA has ever known. Coming out of five years of retirement, Sam and her husband Steven are back, keeping the world safe from the most dangerous villains… and they're also available for bar mitzvahs and weddings. Gugu - short for Gugulethu, the Zulu for "Our Pride", was born in the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, in 1983 to South African doctor Patrick Mbatha and his wife, nurse Anne Raw. Her parents separated when she was only a year old, though she is still close to her father and was brought up by her mother in the town of Witney, Oxfordshire. There she joined the local acting society, Dramascope, and from the age of eleven appeared in a pantomime at the Oxford Playhouse every year. A talented singer, dancer and saxophonist, she joined the Oxford Youth Music Theatre in her teens. In 2001 she won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. Since graduation in 2004, she has appeared in all media, including as an acclaimed Juliet in Romeo and Juliet at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre and on television in such varied series as Bad Girls, Doctor Who and Marple. Her other British television credits include MI5, Bonekickers, and Fallout. It was this latter role that led to her being selected as a Star of Tomorrow 2008 by industry magazine Screen International. Other stage credits include the critically acclaimed Big White Fog at the Almeida Theatre, and Gethsemane, a production at the National Theatre that later toured the U.K. Mbatha-Raw made her West End debut as Ophelia in Hamlet opposite Jude Law, a production that transferred to New York's Broadhurst Theatre for a limited run and became a hit on Broadway in 2009. She's currently shooting her first feature film Larry Crowne in Los Angeles, directed by Tom Hanks and co-starring Julia Roberts. She currently divides her time between London and Los Angeles. Gugu is 5' 4" tall and was frequently mistaken for both Angela Griffin and Sophie Okonedo early on in her career. [sources: Wikipedia.org, NBC.com] Yet another outstanding export from the U.K. ! Arrows of Desire (2004)
Arrows of Desire was a Channel 4 educational programme about poetry.
This was from a third series episode shown in 2004 which discussed My Mistres eyes are nothing like the Sunne by William Shakespeare and she appeared in a dramatisation of it. It predates her earliest IMDB credit which was from 2005 |
