Pauline Starke silent film beauty, 1901-1977. - 22 images
As with many silent stars, she did not make the transition to talking films. One of her last films was indicative of how studios were trying to include sound and color in their creations. “The Viking” from 1928 was a unique production. It was the first color silent film with a musical soundtrack. MGM experimented by filming it in Technicolor 3, the newest color process. The story was based on a novel about Leif Ericsson. It included conflicts between Christians and pagans, Briton and Viking as well as romantic competition for the affections of Helga (Pauline in a winged helmet).

Pauline, whose blond tresses flowed from beneath her own winged helmet, had lamellar scaled armor that left her shoulders bare. The color was striking and called “dreamlike” but reviewers thought the actors’ makeup was overdone. Though the men didn’t fare so well with all the makeup, Pauline held her own on the screen and as a headstrong Viking. Even then, the film was a flop at the box office. It wasn’t until the next decade studios moved to color and even then selectively. 743x941 px - 340x480px - 986x1200px 1281x1600px - 1600x1290px - 3030x2361px These last 7 are watermarked sadly. Pauline Starke and other actresses around 1925. - 13 images
Pauline Starke and Lilyan Tashman in Bright Lights, 1925.
1098x1398px - 2048x2560px - 2048x1557px Lilyan Tashman (1896-1934), was a girl from Brooklyn who made her start in vaudeville and progressed to silent film. She tended to play very snarky, clever “bad girl” roles, often tongue in cheek. As author Eve Golden put it, her performances are "sharp, clever and have aged little over the decades.“ Lilyan Tashman was a lesbian whose sapphic affairs were well known, she married her friend, gay actor Edmund Lowe, in 1925 and the two were much loved socially in Hollywood and known for their extravagent parties. She died of cancer at the age of 37. These 10 are all watermarked and have a 2048px height. Gallery link: http://imgbox.com/g/IGORhKdn9N Last edited by MartinDeeWan; May 2nd, 2020 at 09:27 PM..
