Smile King Magazine - pre Mayfair

I have been searching for a thread on King Magazine but haven't actually found one on here which surprised me as I thought it was the type of magazine that would appeal to members here?

I have only recently discovered King - I have always been a massive fan of Mayfair and had heard that it later merged with King and that King was really the first quality men's magazine in the UK, however I saw one going cheap on ebay and curiosity got the better of me so I decided to buy one to see what it was like and have now got several more - they are absolutely stunning - even better than some of the earlier Mayfair's.

Anyone else here like them or what to chat about them? I am still very new to them and would love to know more about them and other members views.

I think the sheer rarity may be the limiting factor here - even the early Mayfairs are quite hard to come by. I've seen just one copy, and I'd agree that it's a very high-quality and sophisticated-looking magazine - lots of iconic late-1960s style in the artwork, ads etc as well as the girls. It is of course at the very mild end of the range too, even by the standards of the day. I was quite interested, but in the end decided to stick to my Mayfairs for now.

I do love Mayfair, but despite them being later I have found they are actually more expensive - I have next to no chance sadly of collecting any issue from Vol 1, 2 or 3 - strangley even the late 80's ones can be pricey.

I thought King magazines were relativley easy to get hold of as there were so many in circulation, makes you wonder why they stopped making it when it was selling like hot cakes.

Yes, I agree they are very tame, usually not my cup of tea as I love hard core so much, but sometimes it's good to try and slow down sometime

Is there any chance you could post some scans? King was an attempt by Paul Raymond to tap into the "sophisticated" end of the market dominated in Britain by Mayfair. In the end, he admitted defeat, and sold out to Mayfair's publishers. Of course, eventually he was to seize control of Mayfair.

I still have a copy of King with Anita Harris. Its falling to pieces now. Scans of her are already on this forum. I think I still have one with some starlet, Susan somethingoranother, with a Python wrapped around her, and I've seen scans of those pictures here somewhere.

Unfortunately I don't have a scanner - but I know a member with some King's that will hopefully be able to scan and post on this thread so I will ask him.

Interesting for those who have seen King, how would you compare it to Mayfair?
